Washington, D.C., 1943. Unbound. Near Fine. A remarkable collection of letters and limited edition books from Franklin Delano Roosevelt to his longtime friend and personal secretary, Marvin H. "Mac" McIntyre. The collection includes 10 Inscribed books (each issued in an edition of 100 copies or less), a large, early Inscribed portrait, nine Typed or Autograph Letters Signed, and several additional items related to their long friendship and professional relationship. The collection is overall near fine. McIntyre (1878-1943) was born in Kentucky and studied at Vanderbilt. While working as Special Assistant to Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels, he befriended then-Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt. McIntyre went on to work on Roosevelt's 1920 Vice Presidential campaign; this collection includes a striking 1920 portrait of Roosevelt warmly Inscribed: "For the only Mc [sic], in memory of our work together, past present, and to come. The earliest publication of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address in book form, preceded only by the exceptionally scarce 16-page pamphlet: *The Gettysburg Solemnities* (a point disputed by John Carbonell in his book on the subject). Octavo. Stitched, in the original printed wrapper, with a publisher's advertisement on the rear wrap. pp. [1-3] 4-48. Modest overall toning and rubbing to the wrapper, some fraying to the corners, part of the paper along the spine back is perished, one narrow vertical stain to the front wrap and title page, a very good copy with a few scattered contemporary brown ink markings. A large collection composed of manuscript and typed letters, many in original envelopes, photographs, albums, menus and other printed and manuscript ephemera relating to the political careers of Sir Fergus and Lady Joyce Montgomery. Also present are several other objects, including two pieces of ceramic. For a list of the principal contents please see below. Beyond a few minor expected issues such as roughly opened envelopes and the odd crease or tear, the condition of the archive is largely very good, with most of the letters and other paper items clean and bright. There is a little fading to some of the letters/photographs that have been framed and glazed, but otherwise the collection is in excellent order. Top margin above the masthead has small ink stamp of an historical society, together with a "withdrawn" stamp. Top right corner of first page is moderately soiled, horizontal and vertical creases (where folded for mailing), with some partial splitting and a few small closed tears at the folds, a good copy overall of this fragile publication. A very rare early issue of this monthly newspaper printed in Monrovia, presumably published under the auspices of the American Colonization Society, which was founded in 1817 with the goal of returning freed slaves to Africa. A group including 27 issues of the On Target newsletter, as well as twenty other substantial booklets and pamphlets related to the Minutemen Training Program and other efforts, as well as a smattering of other ephemera issued by DePugh, supplemented by several pamphlets from other far-right groups that DePugh kept with his own publications. DePugh's Minutemen organization was a far-right armed group seen by some as a predecessor to the wider militia movement. These newsletters discuss alleged communist plans to use UN troops to strangle the United States, and argue for the need to create a guerrilla movement to stave off this fate. DePugh published theoretical works arguing that a tripartite attack by Socialists, Jews, and Homosexuals was bringing America to its knees, but he argued that such "education" or words alone were fruitless; action by armed patriots was necessary to actually stop this process. Haverhill, Massachusetts, 1810. Softcover. Near Fine. Partially printed letterpress documents. 154 documents, p. [5], 28-177 (all but the first five documents are hand-numbered by Wingate). Each document is filled out in the hand of Moses Wingate in his capacity as Justice of the Peace of Haverhill. Formerly bound with sewing and glue marks along the spine, otherwise the documents themselves are mostly near fine or better with a few of them exhibiting small chips or tears. Each document contains the names of the adversaries and usually the decision by default which is filled out and Signed by Moses Wingate. A few have extensive notes on the verso, but most are straightforward defaults. We suspect most of the plaintiffs were businessmen or shopkeepers and most of the defendants were defaulters on small accounts. Nearly all are near fine or better. The correspondents include a number of noted figures in American literature and academia including: two-page Autograph Letter Signed from Sinclair Lewis; Typed Note Signed by Aldous Huxley; Typed Note Signed by Rex Stout; two Autograph Notes Signed by illustrator Robert Osborn with an Inscribed cartoon; and four Autograph Letters Signed from Edmund Wilson, related to the publication of *The Papers of Christian Gauss*, along with numerous other correspondence. FRESNO, CALIFORNIA. Good. 1943. On offer is a very rare combat diary from World War II. The leather-bound Five Year diary measures 5.5 inches by 4 inches and contains 365 pages. It is approximately 40% complete. The cover is in good condition and all pages are intact. The handwriting is clear and legible. A valuable addition to the diary are the many items tucked in between pages - photographs, newspaper clippings, memos, etc. The diary belonged to Gilbert R. Arguelles. Arguelles was a S/Sgt in the US Army Air Force. Born in December, 1922, he was 20 years old when he began this diary. His home was Fresno, CA. Arguelles passed away in March, 2016 at the age of 93. Arguelles was posted to the 301st Bombardment Group (H). The 301st Bombardment Group (H) was a highly decorated heavy bombardment group flying B-17 Flying Fortresses that served primarily in North Africa and Italy. 1920. A photographic record of American historical handkerchiefs, the basis of a book that was never published. This collection of approximately 460 black & white photographs was taken with the intention of Edwin Lefevre, an avid collector, of publishing a book on the subject. He sought help from other collectors - a form letter in the collection states "I am writing a book about American historical handkerchiefs. This includes those used in presidential campaigns or commemorative of battles or notable political, social and educational events or famous persons. ... I am writing to you in the hope that you will let me know whether you own or know of any such handkerchiefs." Although Lefevre did receive generous help from various collectors, the book was unpublished as far as we can ascertain with a thorough check of OCLC and auction records. Several small splits at the folds of the chart, and small splits at the spine ends, stains on both wraps, encroaching slightly on the chart, worn but otherwise very good. A chart that lists the various American presidential administrations, originally published in 1834, and revised for Jackson's second term. Very fragile and exceptionally scarce. *OCLC* locates a single copy of each of the two editions.

On offer is a group of colourful, original early 20th Century manuscript diaries [2] and an archive of photos and documents handwritten by Merchant Seaman Willard N. Knowles who details an interesting life in both 100+ page books while at sea serving as Chief Engineer aboard several vessels with ports of call including Africa, Cuba, Nova Scotia and the Panama Canal and many, many more. Diary 1 is a 3¼ x 6 inch book having entries dated from 1911through 1921. Willard writes of illnesses aboard the ships, rough seas, loading and discharging of cargo, dealing with behavioural issues involving the ship's firemen (he threatens to put them in irons), robbery aboard the ship, firing the drunken cook, the beauty of Cuba, weather conditions, ship inspections, laying and lifting of the anchor, logging the ship's course, including latitude, longitude, maintenance and much, much more. The letters appear to have been sewn into a ledger at one time and removed, and contain small holes in the inner margins. Each of the seven items belonged to the girlhood-and-lifelong friend of Jackie Kennedy, Countess Vivi Crespi, an American woman who had married an Italian Count. By all accounts Crespi was a glamorous and constant presence at the Kennedy's White House dinners and events at Hyannisport, as well as Newport, where Crespi entertained the Kennedys. She remained a lifelong friend to Jackie, as is testified to here by her entrance pass to the funeral, which states she was to sit "Center Right Forward. Family". The seven items include: 1. He was the son of Albert Manley Read who died in 1861 fighting in the Civil War. Research finds that Mead is listed in the Universalist Register of 1895 as editor of THE GOSPEL BANNER. His handwritten diaries are for 1878 [he is 37 years old], 1882, 1887, 1888 and 1889 when he is 48. Mead is an enthusiastic, prolific writer rarely failing to write a diary entry, rarely failing to detail his visits, his works, his travels and to set these writings apart Isaac Mead proves to be a rather political churchman who rarely fails to press the Universalist Church's approach.
