The Costume of China has plates by the accomplished stipple engraver John Dadley, purportedly after originals by one Pu-Qua of Canton, acquired by the author, William Henry Mason, a major in the Royal Madras Fusiliers, while visiting the country around 1790. Many different trades and occupations are illustrated here. Dadley was also responsible for the plates in the pendant work, the celebrated and gruesome Punishments, which he nevertheless renders with elegance and delicacy. The splendid volume on the Russian Empire are also by Dadley and are based on… Read More

"A delightful and amusing book in fine grain aquatint skillfully coloured (Abbey)." This first edition copy captures the whimsy of "retreats" or supplemental buildings on a property, popular on estates in the Regency England. These curious structures, which could be fashioned as cottages, villas, and ornamental buildings ranging from conservatories to fishing lounges, are a fascinating aspect of Regency architecture, which extended beyond the true Regency (1811-1820) from the turn of the century to the end of George IV's reign in 1830. Set of 36 handcoloured lithographs after satirical illustrations by Jean-Gabriel Scheffer from What one says and what one thinks, Little Scenes of the World. An album of rare lithographs that depict comical scenes of daily life in Paris during the reign of King Charles X, in the Restoration era. Women in the voluminous puff-sleeved dresses and bonnets of the time, the men in elegant jackets and pants, lounging in restaurants, cafes, libraries, gardens and galleries. With title page and 36 hand-coloured plates lithographed and printed by Gihaut Frères in Paris (last six plates printed by Charles Tilt, London). These delightful satirical scenes mock the hypocrisies and annoyances of bourgeois society, in the same way as Thomas Rowlandson depicted the Miseries of Human Life in Regency England. The captions show what the characters say on the left, and what they really think on the right. Description:
Paris: A. Belin, 1813. Very good.. Beautifully bound set of the works of the French playwright, from the library of Frances Mary Richardson Currer, who was among the most celebrated book collectors of her era. This set was once owned by Yorkshire coal heiress Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861), who built a celebrated library of some 20,000 volumes. Contemporaries praised Currer's scholarship and taste, as well as the rigorous organization and "choice condition" of her books. The bibliographer Thomas Frognall Dibdin called her a "book-genius," and remarked of her library: "I may fairly and honestly say, that with the exception of Althorpe, Chatsworth, and Stowe, I know of NO such collection of books, situated in the country that can pretend to break a lance with it [...] The 'Collections' are nearly perfect." In 1820, and again in 1833, Currer issued a catalogue of her holdings, widely viewed as "the model catalogue of a private library" (DNB), and sent copies to book collectors across… Read More
