A scarce and fascinating work on Sir Francis Bacon, his cipher, and steganography, with supporting facsimile images of his works. In the original limp cloth binding. With the bookplate of the Merrymount Press, Boston to the front pastedown and of Nicholas Wall to the rear pastedown. This work draws a specific focus on Bacon's cipher and applies it to the prologue of Troilus and Cressida by Shakespeare as an example. Externally, rubbed to the head and tail of spine as well as to the extremities. Markings to the boards. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'The Property of Merrymount Press Boston' and 'Nicholas Wall' to the rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. XXVII, (1), 32 pp. Rare first printing of Cantor's work on the Bacon-Shakespeare theory: That British philosopher Francis Bacon was the true author of the works ascribed to Shakespeare. Cantor's passionate interest in the Shakespearean authorship question is not very well known. It is, however, a subject he continuously returned to during the latter part of his life where he was plagued by mental illness. After his first period of depression, Cantor turned shunned from mathematics and turned towards philosophy and his big pasion within literarture: The question whether Francis Bacon was the true author of Shakespeare's plays. He published two pamphlets on the subject, supporting the thesis that Bacon was in fact the rue author, one in 1896 and the present in 1897; he even lectured on the subject, in Leipzig in 1899.Cantor's… Read more

Description:
London : Sampson Low, Marston and Co Ltd., 1903. First edition. Cloth. Good. 9.5" by 7". None. A first edition of this work on Baconian theory by William Willis. The Baconian theory of Shakespearean authorship holds that Sir Francis Bacon, philosopher, essayist and scientist, wrote the plays attributed to William Shakespeare, and that the historical Shakespeare was merely a front to shield the identity of Bacon, who could not take credit for the works because being known as a lowly playwright for the public stage would have impeded his ambition to hold high office. Bacon was the first alternative candidate suggested as the true author of Shakespeare's plays. The theory was first put forth in the mid-nineteenth century, based on perceived correspondences between the philosophical ideas found in Bacon"s writings and the works of Shakespeare. Legal and autobiographical allusions and cryptographic ciphers and codes were later found in the plays and poems to buttress the theory. Bound in card… Read more
