Description:
DODGSON (Charles L) "Lewis Carroll":
LAURENCIN (Marie) [1883–1956]
Alice in Wonderland. [Paris: Black Sun Press, 1930].
Complete set of six colored pastel drawings for this unusual Art Deco vision of ALICE, being the actual finished originals made by MARIE LAURENCIN inside a set of black and white outline designs printed as proofs on wove paper. Her original outlines would have been made directly on lithographic stones for printing whereas this manuscript series was prepared for the printers to create color-separation plates (which explains why the color-printed images in the book do not precisely match the published drawings).
Each picture is signed by the artist in colored pencil, with page size measuring 10-7/8 x 14-1/4 inches.
[Additional images available]
Together with: 6 canceled outline proofs from the printer E Desjobert, signed and dated "October 1930", with their printers' stamp. These measure 9-3/4 x 11-7/8 inches on tinted BFK wove paper.
This is one of the artist's most… Read More

Description:
Mimeographed manuscript of the Joseph L. Mankiewicz screenplay. Illustrated with six hundred and forty two pages of drawings and designs by William Cameron Menzies together with an additional eight page prologue and four page epilogue. Original brown paper wrappers (the cover title page and half title page are detached). This massive and heavy 646 page screenplay (13 3/4" x 8 1/4", 3 inches thick) turned out to be impossible for the cast to handle and a more traditional 200 page version was designed for use on the film, the illustrations were removed and the text reset. While Norman Z. McLeod is credited as director, Menzies stepped in to direct when McLeod became ill during the filming (Curtis, page 142). Very good.

A Lewis Carroll rarity.

Provenance: estate of actor Baby LeRoy who appeared in the film as "Joker" at the age of two.

See pages 134-149 in James Curtis' "William Cameron Menzies" book for details on the filming of Lewis Carroll's classic story.

In the decades following their publication, writers on both sides of the Atlantic produced no fewer than two hundred imitations, revisions, and parodies of Carroll's fantasies for children.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is an early printing. Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There is an early printing. Illustrated by John Tenniel, text illustrated. A very nice set. Alice's Adventures were "born on a golden afternoon" in July 1862, when the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) took the three small daughters of Dean Liddell of Christ Church on a boating trip up the Isis. Carroll delighted the three children by relating Alice's adventures, and eventually promised his favorite among the three, Alice Liddell, to write the story down for her. Through the Looking-Glass can be seen as a mirror image of the Alice's Adventures. For example, the latter begins outdoors in the warmth of May… Read More
