Description:
New York: Random House, 1941. Very good in very good dust jacket.. First French-language edition (published during WWII in the US) of Jean de Brunhoff's final Babar title, in which Babar makes the long trip to enlist Father Christmas's help. The BABAR series has delighted generations of young children around the world. The de Brunhoffs' simple and stylish art is widely praised for being "comprehensible and entertaining even if one didn't know the language" (Bader, 547). The BABAR books set the tempo for all picture books that followed: their "large format, fine litho-printing and hand-written text" fueled the "visual triumph" (Whalley and Chester, 189) of the picture book in the 1930s. This New York-printed French edition of BABAR ET LE PÈRE NOËL was published simultaneously with the edition printed in France; it followed the US English language edition only by a year. This was Jean de Brunhoff's final BABAR title before his death - the series was continued by his son Laurent starting in 1948. A… Read More

Description:
1934. BRUNHOFF, Jean de. A.B.C. de Babar. [48] pp. Illustrated throughout in colour. 8vo., 210 x 162 mm, bound in original publisher's decorated boards, decorated endpapers, in a new yellow cloth folding box. Paris: Editions du Jardin des Modes, 1934. First Edition. A number of Babar's friends may be seen herein among the A.B.C.'s, including Céleste, Coco, and Cornélius. Below the "Liste des mots à trouver" Babar says: "Félicitations de Babar à tous les lecteurs qui trouveront d'autres mots." Very minor signs of use, but overall a fine copy of a delightful children's A.B.C., and one of the scarcest Babar books. This work remained unknown to Hürlimann, and only seven copies of it are recorded in American libraries on OCLC.Slight wear, but in general a fine copy of a scarce book.

New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, 1935. Boards. Near Fine/Very Good +. Jean De Brunhoff. A very impressive copy of the 1935 correct 1st American edition, translated from the original French by Merle Haas and published by Harrison Smith and Robert Haas (not the more common Random House re-issue). Tight and Near Fine, with very light soiling to the rear panel. Internally immaculate, with the rich illustrations in bright, vivid color and with no writing or markings of any kind. And in an unusually crisp, price-intact ($3.00), VG+ example of the elusive pictorial dustjacket. Very light, occasional soiling at the dustjacket's panels, several tiny closed tears along the top-edges. Folio, the 3rd title in this beloved series about "the most famous little elephant in the world". The nicest copy this bookseller has seen.

Paris: Editions du Jardin des Modes, 1933. First edition. Very good plus.. First printing of the third title in the BABAR series, featuring the first appearance of the elephant city Celesteville. The BABAR series has delighted generations of young children around the world. The de Brunhoffs' simple and stylish art is widely praised for being "comprehensible and entertaining even if one didn't know the language" (Bader, 547). This third book in the series follows the founding of Celesteville, named after Babar's wife, a city that would become the setting for many subsequent adventures of the elephant king and his friends.
