Description:
1837. Kjöbenhavn, 1837-1847. Bound in one nice contemporary half calf binding with blindstamped and gilt ornamentation to spine. Gilding vague, also the gilt title. Minor bumping to corners. Internally a bit of scattered brownspotting, but overall unusually nice, clean, and fresh. A truly excellent copy. See collation below. A magnificent set - unusually nice and clean and bound together in a contemporary binding, which is almost never the case - of the first edition of this exceedingly rare collection of Andersen's earliest fairy tales. This legendary fairy tale-collection that created the fairy tale-genre and brought Andersen international fame, consists in six parts that together make up two volumes. As with most of the other few existing copies, the present set is a mixture of issues (though here, merely two of the parts are in second issue). "With the passing of each year, Andersen's genious brought forth new "wonder stories", and the fame he had so desperately craved and striven for became… Read More

London & Cambridge: Macmillan & Co, 1863. First Edition. Good. First edition, first printing. First issue with "L'Envoy" leaf present. Bound in publisher's original dark blue cloth stamped in gilt, brown coated endsheets. Good. Cloth worn at corners and spine ends, with frayed started at the rear joint. Cloth lightly rubbed, with front cover mottled. Front and rear inner hinges are exposed, leaving binding a bit tender. Pages toned. Effaced owner inscription still evident on half-title page. Kingsley quickly withdrew the first issue with the poem L'Envoi, leaving only several hundred copies being published as such. Uncommon in the original cloth. Description:
Indianapolis: Bowen-Merrill, 1901. First Edition; in Bleiler. A challenging and confusing book bibliographically; this is in what appears to be a “first state” binding, although it is what was referred to as a “third issue” of the book. Recent research suggests that, noting changes to the copyright page, that this is a second printing. Of course, these terms are not interchangeable, and therefore these designations are at least suspect, although the timeline indicated could prove to be correct. In any event, it is a fine copy, and in the rare dust jacket, with minor wear and tear and a little archival mending at the interior of the spine foot and crown, and a small penned number near the center of the spine.

Description:
1830. Kjöbenhavn (i.e. Copenhagen), 1830. Simple contemporary black half cloth. Internally only light scattered brownspotting. An excellent copy. The rare first edition of the first published collection of Andersen's poetry - Andersen's third published book (at the age of 25) - containing, at the end, the first printing of any of his fairy tales, being also his very first fairy tale, "Dødningen, et fyensk Folke-eventyr" (i.e. "The Ghost" (also sometime "The Spectre"), "A Folk- Fairy Tale from Funen"). This is the first time that Andersen uses the term "Eventyr" (fairy tale), the term which came to denote the genre for which he received world-wide fame as one of the most important writers of all time. "The Ghost" was later rewritten and published for the second time in Andersen's first fairy tale collection, "Eventyr fortalte for Børn" (PMM 299), 1835, under the title "The Travelling Companion". As Andersen would later explain, his first fairy tale was based upon a folk tale from Funen he had… Read More

N.p. [Neu-Ulm], Prometei, N.d. [1947], 8vo, 91 pp., portrait, in original illustrated wrappers, in good condition, wears to top and bottom of spine, slightly spotted to several pages.
First translation of the novel from English with special foreword by G. Orwell. Orwell partially paid the costs of printing.
One of the rarest and important edition published in DP camp.
Initially Orwell planned the novel as satire on English society. Further the novel began to be considered as satire on Stalin society. In the title of the book the translator consciously used the word "колгосп" (collective farm) and referring the reader directly to the Soviet system.
The important part of the foreword by G. Orwell is naming of the repression in USSR in 30s as a Great Purges: "In 1936 I got married. In almost the same week the civil war broke out in Spain. My wife and I both wanted to go to Spain and fight for the Spanish Government. … In… Read More

Description:
1885. [JAPANESE FAIRY TALE SERIES] Kobunsha. THE FIRST 13 VOLUMES OF THE JAPANESE FAIRY TALE SERIES. This set of the series was published by the Hasegawa family when they were known as Kobunsha, working from an address in Minami Saegicho, Tokyo, their first address. The series began in 1885, printed on plain, uncreped paper and hence a bit larger than the creped versions, approximately 18.1 x 12.3 cm. The very first issues of the first few volumes had romanized Japanese language titles and no series volume number. Later volumes from the series had romanized titles first, as do several of the volumes from this set: NEDZUMI NO YOME-IRI (#6), KOBUTORI (#7), YAMATO NO OROCHI (#9) - MOMOTARO, URASHIMA and KACHIKACHI YAMA seem to be quite early appearances as they do not have "englished" titles as in later printings. Indeed, the first volume MOMOTARO, without any indication of a series number, is very early, indeed. The first illustration in THE CUB'S TRIUMPH (#12) is of a norimono with a moveable flap… Read More

1855. Softcover. Very Good. Holograph Manuscript. Octavo. 42, (2)pp. Ribbon-tied wrappers. Foredge gilt. Beautifully written in blue ink with decorated initials rubricated. Small chips to the edges of the wrappers, a pleasing very good or better manuscript. A fairy tale in both prose and verse. Fair knight Jòan goes on a long journey looking for truth and a princess, shadowed by fairies. The fairies dose him with poppies, give him sweet dreams, and intimate that he shall find "thy silver dove," the Princess Alethia. Apparently unpublished, the manuscript is accompanied by a 1936 letter from the Library of Congress Copyright Office, replying to an inquiry and stating that the title is not recorded. Additionally none of the word combinations in the title reveal published works in *OCLC* or other comparable sources. A beautifully rendered complete and unpublished 19th Century fairy story.

Description:
Leningrad: Raduga, 1927. Fine.. First edition of this simple yet dynamic instructional picture book, featuring a modernist approach to book design - a very fine copy. Marshak, a major children's book author and editor of the early 20th century, is best known today for his collaborations with the artist Lebedev and the publisher Raduga, of which this is a gorgeous example. Raduga led the innovations that characterized the Golden Age of Soviet Russian picture books, with an approach similar to Flammarion's Père Castor series in Paris - using avant-garde philosophies to make books designed to encourage interactive reading - but its influence spread well beyond the world of children's literature and into mainstream modernist art. The designer El Lissitzky believed that "It is in the area of children's books that we have accomplished most," asserting that "[h]ere we have found the form that corresponds to the content. The book is made active" (quoted in Hearn). An exceptional copy, the finest we have… Read More

Description:
The first and only edition of "The Hobbit" for the blind in Russian translation. The first translation and the first separate edition in Russian was published in 1976. The Braille edition is made from this Russian translation. The circulation is 300 copies. It is very rare, it is absent even in the Russian State Library for the Blind, especially in other libraries of Russia and the world.
The first Russian edition in Braille was created in 1885. Anna Alexandrovna Adler (1856-1924) for the first time in Russia began publishing books for the blind according to the system of L. Braille, having founded at her own expense in the village of Troitskoye, near Podolsk, a printing house of relief-dot font. On her initiative, the first public reading room for blind readers was opened in the Rumyantsev Museum in Moscow (now the Russian State Library) and the collection of Braille books was launched, which was subsequently transferred to the Library for the Blind. Since 1898, the first Braille magazine in Russia… Read More

Description:
Leningrad: Raduga, 1927. Lebedev, Vladimir Vasil'evich. Small quarto. (12)pp. Bright color illustrations throughout. A rhyming Russian story for children, in which a worn-out old carpenter's plane makes a new plane, his "grandson," to carry on his work. The plane is aided in his work by fellow woodworking tools like the chisel, mallet, and saw. A collaborative work by writer, translator, and poet Samuil Marshak, and painter and graphic artist Vladimir Lebedev. The pair worked together frequently, and were important in the development of children's literature in Russia. In the 1920's, Lebedev became known as "King of the Children's Book," and Maxim Gorky said of Marshak that he was "the founder of Russia's (Soviet) children's literature." Marshak published under Raduga (Rainbow) from 1922 to 1930, while he worked in Leningrad as the head of the Children's Literature Studio. Stapled into self-wrappers, showing some wear at the spine and light staining. Near fine.
