Strassburg: Johann Prüss, 1497. 15TH CENTURY ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NATURAL HISTORY AND MEDICINE . Second (first Strasbourg) Latin edition, very rare, of the most extensive 15th-century work on natural history and medicine, first published by Meydenbach in Mainz in 1491, and compiled by the German doctor and herbalist Johannes de Cuba or Johannes von Kaub (fl. 1484-1503). It was the prototype for all subsequent editions. Due to its date of printing, it is the last major medical work to cover medicines from the Old World only. The Hortus sanitatis, meaning 'Garden of Health', provides information on the medicinal use of plants and animals both real and mythical. Condition: This leaf is in good/very good antiquarian condition with just the expected edge browning and some light page-turning stains in the bottom margin, well away from the text. Full margins and a clear watermark. The leaf is unconditionally guaranteed genuine.
Notes: The Hortus Sanitatis (Garden of Health) is the most comprehensive work on natural history produced in the Middle Ages. It contains all the knowledge then available on plants, beasts, fishes, birds, and minerals, together with their curative uses. Strasbourg: Johann Pruss, 1499. Disbound. Very good. The Hortus Sanitatis, written by an unknown author, was first published in 1491. It describes species in the natural world along with their medicinal uses and modes of preparation. It followed the Latin Herbarius moguntinus (1484) and the German Gart der Gesundheit (1485). Unlike these earlier works, in addition to a thorough discussion of plants, it also includes four more sections describing animals, birds, fish, and stones. Moreover, the author did not restrict himself to dealing only with real creatures, but also includes accounts of mythical animals. This leaf (approximately 8" x 11½") contains Capitulum cii-cvi (Chapter 102-106) from the section title Des Piscibus (Of the Fishes). It is from the 1499 edition published in Strasbourg by Johann Pruss.
