Description:
Wengen, Switzerland: Alpine Films, 1965. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of Orson Welles and John Gielgud on location in Spain for the shooting of "Chimes at Midnight" in 1965. Shot and struck by noted photographer Nicolas Tikhomoroff, with his rubber stamp and the stamp of his Parisian agency, V.I.P., on the verso. "Chimes at Midnight," Welles' third of three legendary Shakespearean adaptations and last masterpiece, is based on his early play "Five Kings," which condensed Shakespeare's War of the Roses cycle into one story. Welles produced the play in New York in 1939 but the opening night, during which Part 1 was performed, was a disaster, and Part 2 was never staged. He revamped the show and revisited it in 1960, again without success. The later production became the basis for this film, in which Welles plays Falstaff. "Chimes at Midnight," as with nearly all of Welles' efforts as a director, was plagued by financial and logistical problems, shot with nearly no budget, and received…

Embossed stamp lower right, atelier stamp on rear, docketed with the name of the subject, and number of the print ("VIII K 14"). Published in PORTRAITS: the Photographs of Carl Van Vechten (1978), edited by Saul Mauriber. Half-length, in costume. 1 vols. 25.6 x 17.9 cm (Approximately 9-7/8 x 7 inches). A rare pre-Hollywood image of the 22-year-old Welles as Faustus in his adaptation of the Marlowe play, which opened on January 8, 1937 at the Maxine Elliott Theatre and ran through 128 performances. "The legend of the man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge and power ... was uncomfortably close to the shape of Welles' own personal myth ... . There are moments when Faustus seemed to be expressing some of Welles' personal agony and private terror." - John Houseman, RUN-THROUGH: A MEMOIR (1972).

Welles, Orson. Unknown Photographer. SIGNED ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF ORSON WELLES. Photographer not known, no date. Photograph, 7 x 5 inches, of Orson Welles inscribed "To Arnold/Love/Orson." Welles is very young in the photograph, seated, in profile, with his right hand in the pocket of his jacket. The photograph came from the estate of L. Arnold Weissberger, 1907-1981, an attorney who represented many prominent personalities in the theater, dance, film and other arts through his law firm Weissberger and Frosch. He was named as alternate executor to his law partner Frosch in Marilyn Monroe's will. Weissberger was Welles' personal attorney from 1938 until 1949, playing a leading role in helping to manage the financial affairs of both Welles and the Mercury Players, and in the successful handling of the defamation lawsuit brought by William Randolph Hearst over Welles' film "Citizen Kane." (See Orson Welles: Rise and Fall of an American Genius by Charles Higham, Macmillan, 2002). His sister, Augusta…

This photograph is inscribed and signed in white ink to Hollywood columnist Louella Parsons, “Dearest Lou, Love from Orson.” Welles had a long relationship with the powerful gossip columnist. When he first arrived in Hollywood, Parsons and Welles got on very well, with her writing positive press about him. When Welles turned to creating Citizen Kane…

[Film] Orson Welles Citizen Kane. Archive of 5 original silver gelatin vintage photographs used as lobby cards in movie theaters. RKO Radio Pictures, 1940. All are 8" x 10" in glossy black and white. Citizen Kane was written, directed, starred and produced by Orson Welles in his first feature-length film, a feat rarely attempted prior to his groundbreaking decision. On a technical level, the film also invented new lighting and focusing methods, developed a new dramatic editing style, and rejected the traditional linear, chronological narrative structure. It was also political, with Welles basing his character of Kane on the life of media mogul William Randolph Hearst. The film stood at number 1 in the British Film Institute's Sight & Sound decennial poll of critics as the greatest film of all time for 50 years, and it topped the American Film Institute's 100 Years, 100 Movies list for multiple decades. The photos feature several iconic scenes from the film including Welles as Kane standing in front of…
