Description:
London: Publishing Offices,, 1871-72. Who killed Edwin Drood? First edition, in the original monthly parts issued between October 1871 and May 1872, of the first of many attempts to solve The Mystery of Edwin Drood, the final, unfinished novel of Charles Dickens. The Mystery of Edwin Drood was projected to be published in twelve monthly parts, but Dickens had only completed six parts when he died of a stroke. Dickens had left no notes or instructions for how the novel was to be completed, and as a result "soon a whole Drood 'industry' (which still flourishes today) grew up, concerned with providing a plausible solution to the mystery" (ODNB). Though the continuation was published anonymously and later wrongly attributed to Charles Dickens junior and Wilkie Collins, the author was the New York journalist Henry Morford. "The plot, although the sparkle and brilliancy of the Master-hand is wanting, is very cleverly and interestingly worked out; and before the close poetical justice is done to all the… Read More

Description:
London: Chapman and Hall,, 1870. Binding variants and more binding variants First edition in book form, an example of both the primary and secondary cloth bindings of the first edition, housed together. John Carter identified the two bindings in his 1932 classic Binding Variants (pp. 108-9), alongside a tertiary binding without gilt embellishment. As often, the trend in binding style as the original publication date receded was towards simplicity and lower cost. The changes here between the two copies are indicative of this, the secondary copy having the removal of a… Read More
