Phillip J. Pirages Fine Books and Medieval Manuscripts

McMinnville, Oregon, United States

Phillip J. Pirages Fine Books an Manuscripts was established in 1978 on a ping pong table in a basement in Kalamazoo, Michigan. From the beginning, its founder was willing to sell a range of material, but over the years, the business has gravitated toward historical artifacts that are physically attractive in some way--illuminated material, fine bindings, books printed on vellum, fore-edge paintings, beautiful typography and paper, impressive illustration. Today, the company still sells a wide range of things, from (scruffy) ninth century leaves to biblical material from all periods to Wing and STC imprints to modern private press books to artists' bindings. While we are forgiving about condition when something is of considerable rarity, we always try to obtain the most attractive copies possible of whatever we offer for sale.

I happen not to be partial to those ubiquitous dust jacket protectors (Brodart and the like). To me, they tend to leave the book feeling rather too much like a library book, and I don't like library books! My dust jackets are protected with a loose-fitting acid-free acetate film which prevents damage without affecting too much the feel of the book. I take great pains in accurately describing my books - both edition and condition. I DO NOT fall into the common error of less experienced book people who assume that a book is a first edition if the only date in it is the copyright date! I'm not at all sure that I go along with all this "first edition, second printing" business. To me, if the book is a second printing, or third or fourth or whatever, then it's a reprint and therefore not a first edition. So if I list a book as a "First Edition" you can rest assured that it is NOT a reprint! And I don't understand how some dealers can just shove an unprotected book into a flimsy padded envelope and call it "packed" and expect it to survive the trials and tribulations of a journey through the postal system without bumping its corners or spine ends. My books will arrive carefully packed in bubble-wrap, cardboard and brown paper and proudly carrying the Bark of the Beech Tree red stamp. Finally, a word about international shipping. And the word is: "expensive"! I apologize for the steep shipping fees but that's what it costs. International rates have skyrocketed in recent years. Anyway, feel free to make use of the [Ask Bookseller a Question] button if you have questions, comments, or observations. Thank you.
