Paris: Genets Jeune 3rd enlarged & revised edition, 1822. Hardcover. Very Good. Plates (3) + pictorial engraved titlepage. 132x82mm gilt dark brown roan-spined boards with marbled covers. Spine decoratively gilt and blind-stamped (edges lightly rubbed). All edges marbled. Frontispiece + tissue guard + engraved titlepage +174pp. Name to front free endpaper (Mary Ashworth) and a few pages with light foxing one leaf with small brown spot possibly from a candle. No loose or torn pages no marginalia or underlining. *Translated and adapted by Bertin from Lessons of Truth by Mrs. C. Mathews first published in 1802. This French version is not in Gumuchian which has only the English edition with fewer stories than here (additional are Mary et Caroline + Madame Dumont). The first 3 stories are in both English and French editions. They are: La Rose (ou histoire du Ellen Selwyn), Adelaide, ou les Epreuves du Courage, and Les deux Soeurs. Bertin was a prolific translator of early English children's books into French. A pretty binding & nice, detailed illustrations.

Small octavo (150 x 97mm or 6" x 3.8") no longer bound into covers but book block completely tight and neat with original sewn-in headbands still present as well as 4 vellum strips to spine. Minor signs of use but all pages tight and clean and All edges marbled. Frontis + titlepage in red & black +[4]pp avertissement + 341pp +[11]pp index; Vol II Frontis + titlepage in red & black + 343pp + [11]pp thus lacking last leaf of index (supplied in manuscript). Name to blank recto of first frontispiece, otherwise a neat tight copy of these short humorous anecdotes. *Very popular when first published in 1699 and reprinted many times until the end of the 18th century.
