Description:
New York: Lyle Stuart, 1950. Fine condition in a Very Good+ slipcase. Sharp corners. Hinges are perfect. NOT a library discard. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are clean and crisp. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Undated (but circa 1950?) reprint of the 1939 Mark Twain Society edition. Privately printed for Lyle Stuart. Twain wrote 1601 in 1876. Because he knew it would be considered irreverent, Twain would not allow 1601 to be included in his published writings. The first printing in 1880 was private and only 4 copies were produced. In 1882, an edition of 50 was printed at West Point. Twain would not even admit to writing the work until 1906. Included here are a verbatim reprint of the first edition and a facsimile of the West Point edition. The historical introduction and footnotes are by Franklin Meine. He also supplies an annotated bibliography that describes 44 editions of the work. Bound in the original gilt-stamped red cloth enclosed in a red… Read More

Hinges are perfect. NO owner's name or bookplate. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. The fourth and apparently final issue of this short-lived magazine in book form. Hardcover. It was edited by Jamaican-born Walter Adolphe Roberts (1886-1962), who also contributed to this issue a short editorial, a play (THE QUEEN'S TENT, pp. 62-80), an article (AL SMITH FOR PRESIDENT), and a book review. This issue is filled with short stories, poetry, and essays. Of special interest is Adolphe de Castro's 17-page essay, AMBROSE BIERCE AS HE REALLY WAS, AN INTIMATE ACCOUNT OF HIS LIFE AND DEATH. Adolphe de Castro met Bierce in 1886, became his protégé, and "wrote" a novella in collaboration with him. The article published here is the basis for the controversial… Read More
