Illustrated throughout by Mansbridge. Some offsetting to endpapers, discreet contemporary gift inscription to flyleaf. Boards slightly rubbed to spine ends. Price clipped dust-jacket shows very well, rubbed to the ends of the slightly toned spine panel, some light soiling to rear panel. some chipping to the top and bottom edges, small loss to top of rear panel. An excellent fresh copy. Very good.

Some marks to the top centimetre or so of the cloth, a couple of patches of tape burn to free endpapers, very slight bowing to boards, some marking to tail edge of the textblock. Price-clipped dust-jacket shows well with just some creasing and nicking to the edges, top corners slightly rubbed. Very good.

Very good copies. Deighton's illustrated history of the aerial campaign. The 1969 Bafta-nominated film 'The Battle of Britain' was produced by Harry Saltzman, who had adapted the 'Harry Palmer' series of films from Deighton's spy novels. Deighton had contributed to Saltzman's James Bond screenplays. 'The Battle of Britain' utilised many of the James Bond and Harry Palmer film crews, including Guy Hamilton (director), Freddie Young (cinematography), Maurice Binder (main titles), Rick Lester & Nosher Powell (stunts) and Derek Coyte (publicity). Birmingham: printed by J. Upton for the venue, 1889. [Concert Programme] ORIGINAL SILK PROGRAMME. Octavo bi-fold, printed on all sides (22 x 15cm). Cream silk printed in dark blue. Heavy fraying to edges, especially fore-edge, with one large brown mark to the front cover, as well as a few much small spots. Wear and creases showing that the programme has been folded twice more. Some evidence of basic repairs to the lower half of the spine fold. A fair copy of an extremely rare and fragile item.

Publisher's black cloth hardcovers lettered in gilt to the spine, cartographic endpapers, dust-wrapper priced at £20. With many photographic plates. A very good copy, slightly sunned to spine. From the library of Deighton's biographer Edward Milward-Oliver, purchased directly by ourselves, with a printed note to that effect loosely inserted.

Publisher's colour paper cover, stapled, and priced at 2s. Crisp and clean, with a little bumping to head of spine, and some bleeding from oxidised staples. Near fine. A story about a junior officer's day spent protecting Mr. Churchill during WWII, first published a couple of months earlier in the 'New Yorker' magazine in the US.

London: The Self-Help Press, no date [circa 1910]. [Self-Help / Political Biography] RARE ORIGINAL PAMPHLET. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.96. Publisher's paper covers illustrated with a photograph by Elliott and Fry, stapled twice and priced at 2d. Crumbling to dust as you read this; as brown as they come and dreadfully brittle. How does it even still exit? Front cover and first leaf loose. There is only one copy in UK libraries (at the National Library of Wales) according to Library Hub Discover (successor to COPAC). Poor, but unlikely to be found in better condition. That's right, you too could take part in the last British cavalry charge, and have a hand in creating the Welfare State! Number two in a series of pamphlets giving a potted history of the exploits of various 'successful' people (most seem to be politicians).

1876-1890. ORIGINAL LEDGER WITH COPIED MANUSCRIPT LETTERS FROM THE DUKE'S BIRMINGHAM SOLICITOR. Quarto (29 x 24cm), with letters written in black ink to a single side of 214 numbered leaves, out of a total of 1000. Delicate leaves akin to tracing paper. In original tan half calf with dark brown cloth boards and marbled endpapers. Together with a word-processed TRANSCRIPT of the letters produced by Gerald Leach, stapled at left margin. Joints split, but hinges remain strong. Very heavy wear to fore-edges and spine. Fair overall. A remarkable collection of private correspondence, largely between Birmingham solicitor R. Harding Milward and John Spencer-Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough. The fifth volume of Churchill's wartime speeches, covering the pivotal year of 1944, which saw the Allies advance on Rome following victories at Anzio and Monte Cassino, and the decisive D-Day landings at Normandy, being the catalyst for the liberation of German-occupied France. Heavily browned, as expected, with a few minor marks and chips to edges. Near fine. Including a letter signed by various members of the Conservative party, including Winston Churchill, Stanley Baldwin, and Lord Halifax, celebrating the success of a programme which had resettled refugee scholars from Nazi Germany in British universities, and calling for new donations to continue the scheme.

Internally clean and crisp. Toning to dust-jacket spine. Wear to jacket edges with some tearing to corners especially upper. Fine.

'Escape' is an extract taken from 'My Early Life' (1930) about Churchill's famous escape from a prison camp during the Boer War. 'According to the Altar Boy' was first published in French as 'Le témoinage de l'enfant de choeur' (1946), and appears here in English for the first time, it first appears in English in book form in the short story collection 'Maigret's Christmas' (1976). Also including contributions from H.E. Bates and Ray Bradbury.

A rare and fragile title, now almost unobtainable in hard covers.
