Description:
Pages are largely about the religious struggles of faith by Margaret Crew who notes that Hannah E. Blackhouse has come from England and favored their meeting. The Gravelly Run Quaker Meeting House was built in 1767 but their opposition to slavery and war, they moved to Ohio before the Civil War. Hannah Backhouse [she was the cousin of Elizabeth Fry] began to visit Quaker meetings in America in 1830. the Quaker Review noted she had attend Yearly Meetings in five states but here for the first time we find she had been to Virginia. Later sources in 1834 refer to this time where she say writes she had observed the "inequities of slavery". After travelling hundreds of miles through the slave states she wrote: "the distress of seeing these poor creatures on the road, just brought up by the slave-dealers, separated from their nearest relatives..the system is horrible. She travelled then to New York where she met opposition since she was a "woman preacher". While the document is largely of religious devotion,…

New York; (1914): G. Schirmer. Octavo. Fourth Edition. 176 pages, index, musical scores. A marvelous study of the range and uniqueness of African American music that arose in the slave period. In the chapter, Variations from the Major Scale, states the adjustments with the flat seven in the major and major seventh cannot be fully captured in standard musical notation. He noted variations in the throat and what he calls a "curious rhythmic effect" created something extraordinarily unique. There are also two chapters on the black Creole culture. Description:
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1928. First Edition. Octavo. Frontispiece, 207 pages. Illustrated by Mahlon Blaine. This is the life of a man. The author had added nothing to the sparse records of old books and the fading memories that linger in the minds of men in his own country. Nor had he left anything out, except a few foolish, though extraordinarily common, legends that he found had no historical basis whatever. Christophe, as is often the ill-fortune of great men, has been remembered chiefly by his enemies and the cruel and silly tales they told of him. This is not a "work of reference," but the author had appended a selected bibliography. A very good copy bound in 3/4 black cloth over decorative paper covered boards, spine gilt (gilt fading), pictorial endpapers, two bumped corners, bookplate of collector Noel Sullivan, as well as his name with his San Francisco address stamped on the front pastedown, top edge and foredge of the book. wealthy American concert singer, philanthropist, and patron…

Description:
An interesting connection between Ambrose Marechal, who served as the third Archbishop of Baltimore and the young French priest John Francis Moranville, the latter was sent to Cayenne [later French Guiana) for the education of the slaves Lafayette worked toward their emancipation and Father Moranville was quite outspoken and when his arrest was ordered, he sailed to the United States settling in Baltimore. Once he saw that there was no public or parochial education for the poor immigrants, he established St. Patrick's Free School. He enrolled fifty girl students but did not restrict the school to Catholics. When the yellow fever epidemics hit Baltimore in 1819, he gave constant attention to the sick which led to his declining health. He sailed from New York in 1823 to his native France where he died the next year. Early checks in Baltimore from the early 19th century with historic significance are rare.

Description:
Mills College, CA: Eucalyptus Press, 1945. First Edition. Octavo. 39 pages. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket of the scarce first edition of one of Howard Thurman's most important books. He shows the outlook of the slaves and how it was interpreted in preaching. His profound views here argued that the slaves from Africa took over a false mutilated gospel from their masters. He writes that in their desperation they discovered the deeper meanings that "the master had profaned in their midst". He argues that genuine Christianity will be discovered where the poor as well as the poor in spirit wrestle with the artificiality of most organized churches. His discussion of Deep River as the richest of spirituals is profound. Bound in blue paper covered boards lettered in gilt, spine plain, mild darkening to board edges in unclipped brown dust jacket lettered in black, tiny edge tears to upper edge near head. A very nice copy.

Description:
Gary, Indiana: The Class of 1925. Oblong. Later called the Emersonian, it is incorrectly reported in most sources that 1925 was the last year when Emerson High School remained an all-white school. As this yearbook shows, however, there was one black student, Frances Anderson (p. 46), who came in 1922 from Matton, Illinois. The editors of the yearbook report they are glad she had moved to Gary, and noted her skill in elocution including the Lake County Declamation Contest, as well as her membership in the Chemistry, French, and Classical Clubs. Interestingly, the yearbook notes she was at the contest but the page devoted to the Declamation Club notes thirty-two names though not hers yet she was noted as an outstanding elocutionist. She also is not found in the pictures of the three clubs to which she belonged. This suggests at the minimum that she was excluded either by a powerful clique or perhaps by the faculty themselves.. The next year there was an attempt to bring six more black students into the…

San Francisco, CA (1929): Pilot Publishing Co. First Edition. Octavo. 64(1) pp. Louis Baldwin was instrumental in bringing the first National Negro Businessmen's Convention to Boston in 1900, which was organized by Booker T. Washington. Baldwin was a member of the planning committee for the convention and was made member of the new National Negro Business League's executive committee. This book presents the way fair-skinned Blacks had abandoned their one-time affiliations with Negroes, including their own relatives, and by mingling at first commercially or industrially, then socially with Caucasians, have ultimately been absorbed by the latter. The text is an early look into the practice of passing, meaning fair-skinned minorities passing as white. The book has been cited in numerous texts on the subject.
