Np/nd [ca.2008]: [Robert Parkin Johnson]. Limited Edition. Octavo. No. 136 of 500 privately printed copies. [iv] 182 pages, map, photographs, with an introduction by Mayotta Southworth. Written by a physician who spent six months on Pitcairn caring for the medical and some of the psychological needs of the islanders, this book gets "inside" the Pitcairners' lives in a way no other book has done. Certain to become an expensive, rare book because of its limited printing. These letters from Dr. Southworth to his family, gathered into a book are an intimate, revealing picture of life on Pitcairn in a most interesting and sometimes graphic way. Inscribed by Alice Southworth and also Ann S. McFarland Southworth both to a noted collector of the Pitcairn saga. A fine bright copy bound in dark green stiff paper wraps lettered in black, spine lettering black.

A scarce work only recorded copies at Univ of Philippines, Hawaii and Institute of SE Asian Studies in Singapore. Bound in light blue paper wraps lettered in gilt, spine gilt, spine faded, previous woner's name stamped on u0pper front wrap. A very good copy.

Noumea, New Caledonia: Noumea. Stapled Wraps. Very Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Stapled wrap, with folded interior pages (~3). Noumea is the capital city on the Main Island of New Caledonia, in the French territory in the southwest Pacific. The pamphlet appears to be ca. 1930. The folded interior pages are news print, and the outer wraps are black-lettered tan paper. This appears to be a rare piece of ephemera.

Of course, it has all sorts of professional men such as doctors and lawyers or furniture salesman but there is also a photograph of Jack London who had just published "The Son of the Wolf", Ambrose Bierce; Hubert Howe Bancroft, Charles Lummis, Joaquin Miller, and on one page the Big Four (Stanford, Huntington, Hopkins and Crocker), the McClatchys of Sacramento, Bound in full dark brown leather lettered and decorated in gilt, spine lettring gilt, spine has changed to lighter shade of brown, top edge gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, a very nice clean copy.

London: John Snow, 1841. Octavo. xviii, [ix-x] pp., folding map, 506 pages, Illustrated by G. Baxter with 25 full page wood engravings with the hand colored frontispiece of Tu Po Chief of Rarotonga (which often is lacking). When John Williams arrived at Samoa, there were already a number of crude Christian cults, the Tongans had already been converted in large part to Weslyan Methodism. He treated them with respect even understanding the dilemmas of renouncing their old gods. Of course, their relative sexual freedom was also a difficult issue. This issue is complete and the map is in fine condition. Bound in ¾ calf over marbled paper covered boards, edges speckled brown and blue, raised bands ruled in gilt, one compartment lettered in gilt, light wear to binding, a few spots of foxing or toning to title page and some plates, the outer margin of page [ix] may either have been repaired or simply a stain, p. 505 outer margin repaired.. Over all, a very nice copy.

The Naga City case study as a clue to Philippine politics with many insights found nowhere else. Local politics has been one of the favorite topics of political scientists doing research on the Philippines because it is regarded as providing significant clues for understanding the nature of Philippine politics. Already a scarce item, most copies are found in university libraries. A fine copy bound in green cloth, spine lettering gilt, in a fine pictorial dust jacket.

A vividly told story of the coninent's strange geologial history of its pland and animal life, its mineral wealth, both known and speculated, and its imprtnace in weather research. The author gives the relevant economic and political easons why these bleak areas ae today so avidly coveted. Ma Huan, a Chinese Muslim, sailed on the 4th, 6th, and 7th voyages of the eunuch admiral Cheng Ho in the early 15th century as an official interpreter, visiting 20 countries including customs of the peoples of the Persian Gulf. J.V.G. Mills who has not only translated the work but has provided an in depth study of maritime Asia in the period between Marco Polo and Vasco da Gama. It is the first work to describe the dimensions of the ships and the numbers of officers, troops, and crew in the first expedition.
