Description:
A pleasant letter from the cartoonist who created Cathy which had a 34 year run in 150 major newspapers. She began drawing pictures as an "emotional coping mechanism" but when her mother suggested sending them to a publisher she did to stop the nagging. Instead she received a contract which changed her life. This letter is dated May 17, 1978 and addressed to Dear Thomasine, a fan, to whom she writes: "thanks for taking the time to remind me that all the free books I could ever need are at my public library. If I see the opportunity, I'll remind all my other readers, too." Best Wishes, Cathy Guisewite. The image she has at the bottom of the letter has her holding a book and in the spine is the word: Library. Matted and with original envelope.

Description:
Santa Barbara: Capra Press, 1987. First Edition. Octavo. First printing. 196 pages. Le Guin's primary purpose is to write about animals and other nonhuman living things in ways that belie the cultural myth that "animals are dumb: have no words of their own. She is drawing on Native American legends of the First People sometimes described as "members of a race of mythic prototypes who lived before humans existed. Significantly, "Buffalo Gals" begins with Myra's displacement across a boundary, into a realm where she is asked to take a drastically different view of life from that which separates "thinking" mankind from the sensitivity of animals. Feminist scholars see this work as an example of a poststructuralist Approach to Ecofeminist Criticism. This copy has the ownership signature of "Philomena Guillebaud" whose work in Cambridge was on behalf of the homeless while writing a guide to Cambridge's west end. Hartwell, 200 significant AF Books by Women, 1984-2001. A very good copy bound in 1/4 rust… Read More

Description:
London: T. Payne and Son, 1782. First Editions. 12mo. In five volumes. (1)pp. advertisement after title page. The author's second book. Evelina, her first book was written anonymously but became surprisingly popular. Burney laid the ground work for female novelists to come. She improved the respectability of the female writer. The contents of her books were considered proper even for the eyes of young ladies, and she displayed modesty in her personal life. Burney's works have more in common with Samuel Richardson's Pamela than Eliza Haywood's Love in Excess, but Burney's novels depict more realistic female heroines. Anne Radcliffe, Maria Edgeworth, and Jane Austen were all subscribers to the serialization of Burney's Camilla, and all owe Burney a debt for advancing the popularity of the courtship novel and the possibility of women being considered as novelists of worth. In total, she wrote four novels, eight plays, one biography and twenty volumes of journals and letters. In one of her journals, she… Read More

Description:
An interesting item from John Munds, whose maternal grandmother was Fannie L. Willard and the first woman member of the second Arizona State Legislature. She was nominated by Governor Hunt for the state representative to the International Woman Suffrage Alliance in Budapest (1913). She was secretary of the first state suffrage organization and was a major voice for the Suffrage Bill of 1903 which passed the Legislature but was vetoed by Governor Brodie. Her husband had been a cattleman before becoming Sheriff of Yavapai County. The 3" x 5" card discusses how John Munds had been invited to hear the 75th Anniversary of Women Suffrage at which Justice O'Connor was awarded the first annual "Frances Willard Munds Award". The article in the Arizona Republic of September 24, 1995, reports she gave an "impassioned speech" to a crowd of 800 women. In the speech she notes how the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza had originally been the Adams Hotel and was the chief place woman suffragist met. (It was not until August… Read More

Description:
New York; (1935): Falstaff Press, Inc. First Edition. Octavo. 32 pages. The original illustrated plates are held within various institutions. The author of this work was Solomon Malkin, founder of AB Bookman's Weekly. He had studies under Magnus Hirshfeld at the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin before the Nazis shut it down. OCLC notes only his pseudonymous name though his papers both at the Grolier Club and the Pattee Library at Pennsylvania State have his name and list of erotica he translated. The various Anti-Vice organizations (often led by the Roman Catholic Church) attempted to not only suppress the publications but several of the major publishers drew long prison sentences (see Jay A. Gertzman, on the Mail Order Distribution of Erotica. The Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, Vol. 86, No. 3 (September 1992). Macmillan: New York, 1940. Octavo. Later Printing. Inscribed by the author. 170 pages, illustrated by Carol Lane Fenton, index. The Exiled Writers Committee was a project to raise money for writers who had been exiled by the Third Reich. They were a part of the anti-Stalinist left wing. In February 1941, they asked major authors who were in sympathy with the Exiled Writers to sign and inscribe a book for an auction to raise funds for them. (It should be no surprise that though its supporters were anti-Stalinist, the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover considered them subversive). Edith M. Patch was the first successful professional woman entomologist in the United States. "Greetings to the Exiled Writers Committee, February 14, 1941. Tenting in the various deserts of Southwestern United States for several months during the late winter and spring of 1936, I met the subject included in this book. I sent it with kind regards. At age 14 she wrote an article "Why We Want to Fly" (which was published in the U.S. Air Service magazine. In 1939 she was a correspondent for the NY Times covering a Cuban air show. At age 25 she was the first woman photographer accredited to the Pacific Fleet. After World War II, she was in trouble spots around the world. While at the Hungarian border near Andau, she became friends with writer James Michener who wrote: "Dickey and I sometimes went far beyond the Russian lines. I was cautious, she was totally fearless.
