GOODY TWO SHOES ABC AND PICTURE BLOCKS

McLOUGHLIN PUB. GOODY TWO SHOES ABC AND PICTURE BLOCKS. NY: McLoughlin Bros., no date, circa 1895. Housed in the original box are 16 wooden blocks depicting scenes from Little Goody Two Shoes on one side, a pictorial alphabet on the other side and words from the alphabet on the edges. The box measures 10 1/2" high by 17" wide with a great chromolithograph on the cover. The box is slightly worn with small split on one edge else VG+. Inside there are 16 wooden block puzzle pieces, each 7/8" thick. The fronts of the puzzles depict 2 scenes from Little Goody Two Shoes, the verso's show a pictorial alphabet. 2 edges on each block have words from the alphabet. Very scarce.

"There was a young lady of Cork, Who declining to eat with a Fork, Her fingers would use, And the feelings abuse, of the delicate people of Cork." Each page has a humorous,large 3-color illustration, with the cover signed by C. Edmonds. Scarce.

Most letters are represented by a different type of naughty or disobedient child: Quarrelsome Queenie, Dirty Dick, Noisy Nicholas, Reckless Robin, Sulky Susan etc. Each letter has a humorous rhyme by Bingham faced by a marvelous full page color illustration by John Hassall in his broad style using flat colors. Rare.

ABC. (MILITARY) ARMY & NAVY A.B.C.. Chicago: George M.Hill, no date, circa 1897. 4to (7 1/4 x 9 7/8"), cloth backed pictorial boards. Corners rubbed and some minor edge wear else near Fine. Each letter is on a separate page with text in verse, almost all of which deal with battles and people in the Spanish - American War. Text pages have half-page illustrations, opposite which is a fine full page pen and ink drawing in black and white. There is also a great chromolithographed frontispiece. Of course "R" is for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders and "J Stands for Joy / That the Cubans now feel / To be free, and from under / The proud Spaniard's heel." A beautiful copy of a rare military ABC.

Printed on one side of the paper, every letter is represented by a full page poem dealing with various military themes and ethnic groups, printed in a large font. Accompanying the verses are fine full page chromolithographs printed by Kronheim. "D" is for Dragoon, " "I is for Indian Horseman, "Z" is for Zoave. This is a companion to Aunt Louisa's picture books for children. First editions are rare and this is a nice copy.
