Spine and gilt title is faded. Heavy soiling to back board. Corners and spine are bumped. All edges have light wear. Binding is tight. Endpapers have light pencil marginalia. Light, uniform foxing throughout text block. Frontis is two b&w illustrations, one of J. C. Fremont and the other, Col. J. J. Abert. This book follows the Fremont expedition to the West Coast from 1843-1844. His report included descriptions of the physical geography of California and "notices of the Gold Region" (as stated on the title page) and was very popular among the gold seekers of the time and others on the Oregon Trail. ; Book; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 456 pp .
