Judge Rentoul had been quoted in the Daily Telegraph on February 11, 1909, regarding the number of criminal immigrants he had sat for in a week, immigrants who had been banished from their own countries. He was asked to explain his comments for the House of Commons, and the resulting discourse is published here, in which Judge Rentoul and Gladstone's opinions on expelling immigrant offenders surface and they quibble over numbers.
