Description:
Victoria, 1898. Very good condition. An indenture for 4 allotments in the township of Keilor, which is now a suburb of Melbourne just west of Tullamarine. The township was a noted camping place for people and bullock teams to and from the gold diggings at Castlemaine, Ballarat and Bendigo. Keilor Post Office opened on 2 March 1854 and a general store, blacksmith, hotel, police station, courthouse and bridge were all built during this time. The indenture is between Donald McDonald of Derriliquin and 3 parties: John Harris of Essendon, Donald Alexander McDonald of South Yarra, and Emma Jane Watt, widow, and concerns 3 Crown grants all dated 1854. The schedule identifies the land as being in the township of Keilor: Allotment No. 14, Section 10 bounded on the north by Macedon St; and allotments 16, 17 & 18 of Section 11 which refer to Kennedy Street, Macedon Street and Arabin Street Signed on the last page by John Harris and Donald Alexander McDonald, with attorneys signing for Robert Orr and… Read More

Description:
Niagara, C. W. (Canada), 1852. Very good condition. A very rare, unrecorded, Australian gold rush broadside, advertising to Canadians outside of Toronto a ship departure to the gold rush in "Sydney" via Boston, and carrying Edward Roper, an artist who pictorialized the Australian bush. It is not recorded on WorldCat, Trove or the Canadian National Catalogue and handsomely printed in a variety of bold type fonts. In February 1851, gold was discovered at Ophir near Orange in New South Wales by Edward Hargraves. This find launched the Australian gold rushes. Most likely based on this information and the slow pace of accurate news moving about the globe, Sydney was cited as the destination for the ship Concordia. At some stage between the printing and their arrival in Australia, the destination of the ship was changed to Melbourne and the Victorian gold diggings. According to Jim Burant, who worked for Library and Archives Canada for 38 years, "Roper embarked from Boston on board the sailing ship… Read More

Description:
Melbourne: Herschells Pty Ltd, 1932. The film is another matter - how incredible that you have this important piece of Australian film/sound history with you in the U.S. The first sound recording of Lyrebirds was done on the optical soundtrack of film in 1931 and subsequent films were shot and compiled later, although there are some significant gaps / missing films in this archival history, which is what really interests me here. In terms of identifying what it is, It looks like it's 35mm at 658ft, which would give it a running time of between 6-12 mins. Are there any further dates / names on it or associated materials? Has it been preserved well to archival standards, to your knowledge? I certainly agree it would be of cultural importance to get this item over here and to identify its provenance fully. It would also be really useful for my project. I would be very interested in acquiring it (although to get a grant for the purchase of it would be ideal, which would not be an immediate outcome… Read More

Bairnsdale, Victoria: C. Mason, 1893. Very good overall. A handsome set of cabinet cards of the Bairnsdale area. The photographer is "C. Mason & Co., Photographers, Bairnsdale", so printed at the bottom of the cards. The State Library of Victoria holds one cabinet card "Portrait photograph of a young woman" [BIB ID 1804685] with the same card style, listing it as an albumen silver, undated but listing the photographers active dates as ca. 1893-97. The images are approximately 5 1/4 x 8 1/4", mounted on pink card 8 1/2 x 6 3/8". They are all titled on the verso in a period hand. The images include a great image of the town, "Main St. B-dale looking west", the shops lining one side of a central park area which is fenced by a long series white picket fences, the roads dirt. Another is "A group of hop pickers, B-Dale", titled on the verso. This is a lovely period image of about 50 men, women and children standing and sitting for their portrait in front of the hop fields; "Mitchell Valley from Pic-nic… Read More

London: British Hydrographic Office, 1851. 95x63 cm. Tooley. Maps. Very good overall. British Admiralty chart, updated to 1851. Tooley does not record this edition and it is not listed on Trove. Printed by the Admiralty just prior to the discovery of gold, it appears to be similar to 1844 first edition. The only additions so far located appear to be additional or changed colored markers in the entrance to the Port Phillip inset. The large format sea chart shows the South East portion of the Australian mainland and the north coast of Tasmania. Stokes (1811-1885) accompanied Darwin on the H.M.S. Beagle in 1837. He was employed by the British Hydrographic Office to chart parts of the Australian coastline. He was the author of "Discoveries in Australia; with an Account of the Coasts and Rivers Explored and Surveyed during the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle in the Years 1837-38-39-40-41-42-43". Description:
London: John Betts, 1855. Very good condition. A pair of maps of South eastern Australia, showing the area pre- gold discovery and post- gold discovery. The first map, South eastern Australia, published in 1848, shows New South Wales extending from Farquhar Inlet down to just below Bateman Bay, with Victoria named Australia Felix, and with an inset at the upper left, Plan of Adelaide, and "Continuation of South Australia inset at lower left. The number 43 on a small paper label at the lower right corner of the map. 15 x 12 1/2". The second Betts map (of the gold regions), is a re-issue of the South Eastern Australia map and shows much new detail. It was separately published for the use of arriving gold miners to Victoria and New South Wales and was referred to as a six penny map. New South Wales now extends from Farquhar Inlet all the way down to Cape Howe. Australia Felix is there, but with Victoria printed below. Description:
Sydney: Caxton Steam Machine Printing Office, 1871. Wraps. Very good - condition. Scarce biographical booklet, the only one on Ristori published in Sydney, describing the life of the Italian actress Adelaide Ristori, renowned as a tragedienne. Ristori visited Australia with a large Italian entourage for 4 months in 1875, performing in Ballarat, Melbourne and Sydney, and this booklet was likely published as a promotional piece for the tour. This Australian booklet is not dated, although Ferguson's Bibliography of Australia assigns a date ca. 1871. It was translated from Italian into English to be used as an advertising piece for Ristori's 1875 Australia tour. It was published at the Caxton printing office, which was functioning under that name until 1876. Adelaide Ristori (1822 - 1906) toured widely, including Paris (1855, 1856), London, Madrid (1857), and the United States (1866). The booklet describes Ristori's American visits: the first tour was mainly in the North, the events of the Civil War… Read More
