Description:
Paris: Masson et Cie, 1924. Good +. Volume III ("Studies on Vinegar and Wine"), concerning the world renowned microbiologist Louis Pasteur's research on wine fermentation and spoilage, "Les maladies des vins". In 1863, Pasteur was commissioned by Napoleon III to find a solution to the spoilage of French wine which was causing enormous financial difficulty for French wine producers; Pasteur proved that bacteria were causing the wine to spoil, research which led eventually to the development of the process of pasteurization. This terrified the wine makers, but it was effective, and eventually led to Pasteur's development of the germ theory of disease. Large 4to, viii, 519pp. Grey paper wraps, title in black and red at front cover and spine. Front cover detached with ruffled edges, spine chipped, rear cover lacking. Internally, previous owner signature at ffep; pages bright and clean. Unopened. In French.

1860. Very good condition. Charming and unusual hand colored engraving from 'Les Fleurs Animes', a collection of 52 illustrations, each with an accompanying story having to do with the interesting notion of reversing the comparison of human emotions to flowers.
