Description:
Washington DC: Library of Congress. Very Good. N.D.. First Edition. Hardcover. This volume wholeheartedly confirms the old adage that "you can't judge a book by its cover. But, just to confuse the issue, it was designed and made to be so judged. The spine has a label lettered in gilt on a red leather label, reading: "CARRANZA / ORATORIA / ARGENTINA" Below this is an oval stamp lettered in black: "Library of Congress / Smithsonian Deposit." Below this, at the foot of the spine, also lettered in black: "LA PLATA y Bo. ARIES / 1905." These details do indeed belong to a real book published by the firm of Sesé y Larrañaga Editores -- in the cities of La Plata and Buenos Aries, Argentina. This book was edited by Neptalí Carranza under the title: "Oratoria Argentina : Recopilación cronológica de las proclamas, discursos, manifiestos y documentos importantes, que legaron a la historia de su patria, argentinos…

First Edition. 329 pages; Publisher's brown morocco leather spine over tan cloth boards, top edges gilt, others trimmed rough. An excellent copy; the spine is intact and the gilt lettering fresh, corners and the foot of the spine very slightly bumped, internally clean and free from foxing. Frontispiece portrait of John Boyd Thacher [1847-1909]. Several page facsimiles of fifteenth century books in the LC's Thacher collection, one features a stunning decorative initial letter in red. Thacher's aim as a collector was to attempt to assemble an example from each press active during the period 1455-1500. His success can be gauged by examining his extensive collection carefully catalogued in this volume -- a catalogue which constitutes 840 works -- specimens of over 500 presses. Outstanding items include a vellum copy of Rationale Divinorum Officiorum by…

Description:
New York: Barnes & Noble. Good. 1939. First Edition. Paperback. 22 pages; This sixteen page catalogue along with the six page supplement lists collectible books offered for sale by Barnes & Noble in 1939; it was mimeographed on legal size paper, stapled at upper left corner and folded in the middle. There is one tear to the first sheet and general age toning and dust soiling. A fascinating survivor of an earlier era of book collecting. Though in our current age of ever-declining prices for run-of-the-mill First Editions, there are a few titles on offer in this 1939 catalogue that have seen substantial appreciation. For example, Virginia Woolf's Orlando (Signed ltd., 1/800 copies) Mint - $10 ; James Joyce's Annalivia Plurabelle (Signed, Ltd.) - $3 ; Ernest Hemingway's Winner Take Nothing (Fine in DJ) - $2 ; Edith Wharton' Decoration of Houses (as new) - $7.50 ; F. Scott Fitzgerld's Tender is The Night (As New in DJ) - $2 ; etc. .
