Les Philosophes Belges - Textes et Etudes (Vol VIII); vii, (1), 74, 175 pages; Contents clean and complete, housed in modern patterned portfolio with original rear wrapper and most of backstrip, lacks front wrapper. OCLC 949046469 Gaston Wallebrand (1884-1941) is one of the pioneers in the study of medieval linguistic theory. His edition of Siger de Courtrai's grammatical and logical writings was the first modern edition with a substantial introduction to the medieval linguistic text belonging to the so-called Modistic tradition. Wallerand succeeded in giving a remarkably informed exposition of the development of medieval grammar. Siger de Courtrai (Latin Sigerus de Cortraco , Flemish Zeger van Kortrijk ) was a grammarian and philosopher of language from the Modistes school. New York: Collins and Hannay. Good. 1825. Hardcover. 531, [1], 122 pages; Full contemporary sheep, flat spine, front cover now detached. This 1825 edition of the Screvel Greek-Latin lexicon - as edited for anglophone students by Joseph Hill; John Entick; William Bowyer; Peter Steele - is the third American edition, first published in Philadelphia in 1808. It is not a rare book, but the provenance of this copy is fascinating. Mounted to the front paste-down endpaper is the printed booklabel of the "PLATTEVILLE ACADEMY / Library of Philozaetean Society." This printed label is pasted over an ink inscription, but the first line is clearly visible: "Library of Platteville ..." This refers to the Platteville Academy, in Grant County, Wisconsin -- the first institution of higher learning in the Wisconsin Territory, established in 1839, nine years before Wisconsin became a State. Platteville was founded by Major John H. Rountree, a veteran of the Black Hawk War, who… Read More

The system used is essentially Pitman shorthand, first introduced in 1837 by Sir Isaac Pitman, M.P., and improved many times since. Pitman's system uses a phonemic orthography. For this reason, it is sometimes known as phonography, (meaning 'sound writing' in Greek). Pages 41-71 are devoted to the "Key" set in standard English (with a phrase or two in Greek, befitting John Stuart Blackie's long tenure as Professor of Greek at Edinburgh University. Zürich: Meyer und Zeller. Very Good. 1858. Hardcover. 2 p.l., 203 & [1, errata] pages; Contemporary pattern-printed paper-covered boards, flat spine ruled in gilt, red titling slip lettered in gilt. Probably a publisher's binding. This is one of the early modern editions of "Orendel" -- a Middle High German poem, traditionally called a "Spielmannsdichtung." The first 103 pages contain the edition of the poem in the Middle High German original with numbered stanzas, and the final 100 pages consist of the introduction and notes by the editor Ludwig Ettmüller. This introduction cites the oldest manuscript of this poem, (Orendel is thought to date from the 12th century) known to the editor, which he states was written on paper in 1477 (small folio, on 64 leaves); in Ettmüller's time, this manuscript was in the Stadbibliothek in Strassburg. Today, alas, it is considered to be lost. Ettmüller also mentions a printed edition from Augsburg… Read More

Hardcover. 80 pages; Bound in vellum-backed marbled boards with tan leather spine label -- uncut (early 19th century? ) The spine is somewhat darkened, but generally an excellent copy of this scarce little book. An early owner has copied Brunet's complimentary description on a slip of old paper -- "Ce petit volume de 80 pp. Est le plus rare, peut-etre, de ceux qui sont partie de la collection des auteurs latins imprimes par Comino..." [Brunet V: 616]. Also quoted on this same slip, from Hebenstreit p. 223 "Editio ex Cominianis rarissima..." And from Ebert number 22114 "Very few copies printed" According to Brunet, this is a preliminary offprint of material included in the third volume of Comino's edition of Muret's works.
