Shaler studied at Harvard under Louis Agassiz and later become a Harvard lecturer and professor of paleontology (1869-1888) and a professor of geology (1888-1906). Under the early influence of Agassiz, Shaler was broadly a creationist and anti-Darwinist, but once he was securely established at Harvard, Shaler gradually accepted Darwinism in principle.
