Washington: National Geographic. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2007. First Edition. Hardcover. Autograph; Illustrated with 200 portrait photographs by Diana Walker. Inscribed and signed by the author on title page. As a Time magazine photographer covering the White House through four presidential administrations, Diana Walker enjoyed incomparable access to the world's major movers and shakers. Going behind the scenes and photographing her subjects over the course of years, she captured Presidents and their families in wonderfully candid moments and world leaders in the course of momentous events. Walker's way of engaging people and inspiring their trust results in portraits that are refreshingly spontaneous and open-giving viewers the feeling that they've met each subject personally. Many of those portrayed are notables in politics, industry, science, entertainment, and the arts-from Ronald Reagan to Steve Jobs; from Lillian Gish to Princess Diana and Prince Charles;… Read More

Bundling was a sort of practice run at marital compatibility under the family roof; couples were each wound up in cloth or sacks then shared a bed with a bundling board keeping them apart. The tradition originated either in the Netherlands or in the British Isles and later became common in colonial United States, especially in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Description:
Boston: Northeastern University. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1997. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. xvi, 313 pages; Looks new, unread. Thomas H. O'Connor examines the dramatic way in which the Civil War affected Bostonians on the home front and how they in turn contributed to the Union Cause. Four distinctive groups are focused on Businessmen, Irish Catholic immigrants, African Americans, and Women. In this informative microcosmic study of a city during four crucial years, O'Connor (The Boston Irish, 1995) describes how the Civil War's battlefield upheavals were matched by quieter revolutions in metropolitan society, commerce, and politics. One part of O'Connor's narrative--the progress of the Hub's soldiers through four unexpected years of agony--is enlivened by excerpts from contemporary diaries and letters, but covers the same ground as regimental and Army of the Potomac histories. Fortunately, he also spotlights how four local groups, often at… Read More
