Description:
McClelland and Stewart, 1981 and 1983. 1982 reprint and 1983 reprint. very good/good. The Dark Broad Seas is Volume 1 of RAdm Brock's memoirs "With many voices" and covers the period from 1939 to the end of the Korean War. The Thunder and the Sunshine (ISBN 0-7710-1625-5, 1982) breaks the silence of Brock's controversy with Hellyer in a most candid way, exposing the damage done by politicians to the Royal Canadian Navy. Both volumes are slightly later (1982, 1983) impressions of the 1st edition. Both dj's have small tears with no loss of material. Vol 1 has a gift inscription on f.e.p, vol 2 has damage to page 105 without any loss of text. Clean, tight copies of this most readable autobiographical work

Volume one describes the needs of the convoys for protection and as Canada took more responsibility the Canadian Air Branch of the Navy needed aircraft carriers and planes. HMCS Warrior, and HMCS Magnificent became part of the fleet and the pilots were flying Swordfish and Fireflies. Volume two The new carrier HMCS Bonaventure was to replace HMCS Magnificent in 1957 with modern equipment and the new ASW tracker aircraft. The carrier turned out not to be able to handle the Banshee jets in combination with the ASW operations. Problems occurred with the unification of the armed forces and with cost overruns on a refit for Bonaventure the ship was paid off 1969 and no more fixed wing carriers. Description:
C. J. Musson and Associates, Toronto, 1985 first edition. 103 p. profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings/diagrams, data sheets. The Royal Canadian Navy had been in existence for 20 years before acquiring the first fighting ship actually built to its order. These were the destroyers 'Saguenay' and 'Skeena' who, with four other 'River class' units made up the tiny offensive force with which the RCN went to war in 1939. Later augmented by the transfer of eight more near-sisters from the Royal Navy, these formed the nucleus of what was to become the third largest Allied navy, and made a valuable contribution to the successful outcome of the Battle of the Atlantic. Very good/ very good.
