First issued privately by the author in 1954 in a limited edition of 250. Of this edition only 450 copies issued in 1983 and a further 450 copies in 1999. Book in very good condition. A little marking to front cover adjacent to spine. Light creasing to lower corner of cover and diminishing through following pages. Very clean and tightly bound. Book in a removable plastic sleeve.

The aim of this book was to fill a notable omission in the field of British topographical bibliography, namely in providing a list of as many works in this genre with steel-engraving as the author could assemble with the collation of each work provided in full. Book in very good condition. Just a hint of very faint toning to endpapers. Internally very clean and bright. Dust jacket very good and unclipped. Extremely minor edge wear only. Spine very slightly discoloured.

Minor horizontal wrinkle to covering of upper board, which loos like a production fault. Very clean and bright copy, free from marks and annotations.

Cobden-Sanderson and the Doves Bindery, which he founded in 1893. The author focuses on the broad range of Cobden-Sanderson's ability and his gift for beautiful design. The book is profusely illustrated. Very good condition. Minor damp damage to endpapers and prelims, causing some swelling of the paper (front free endpaper & following three leaves) and to free rear endpaper. No other damp related issues. The book is extremely clean and bright internally and free of marks. Printed Addenda & Corrigenda sheet loosely inserted (which is also slightly ruckled due to the damp damage).

Unlike many private presses, the owners of Gregynog (Gwendoline and Margaret Davies) had no knowledge of typography or printing. Neither ever set a line of type or pulled a sheet from the press and they rarely visited the press. However, they did know what they liked and gave approval (or otherwise) to a staff which mainly kept its distance. The sisters role lay in providing substantial sums of money to support the press, in providing accommodation and machinery and, through their intermediary, Dr Thomas Jones, advice from outside literary and technical experts.
