London: Lion and Unicorn Press, 1958. Limited edition 31/200. Hardback. The renown of the Italian calligraphers Arrighi, Tagliente and Palatino, was due to their books of instruction, he first of their kind. Soon after the publication of Palatino's book in 1540, Juan de Yciar, a young Biscayan who had settled in Saragossa as a calligrapher and teacher, was at work on a book that was clearly inspired by these masters. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1984. Hardback. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. The Kelmscott Press (1891 - 98), founded by William Morris, is probably the most influential of all the private presses. By emphasizing the fundamental importance of excellent ink and paper, well-designed typefaces and handsome ornaments, Morris revived the book arts and produced a series of fifty two books that are still widely admired and collected. This bibliography was based upon Sydney C. Cockerell's "An Annotated List of All the Books Printed at the Kelmscott Press in the Order in Which They Were Issued" (1908). Revere, Pennsylvania: Woolmer/Brotherson Ltd., 1986. Hardback. [i - x], xi - xv, [xvi], xvii - xxxiv, [xxxv - xxxvi], 1 - 250pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Since the first edition of this checklist was published, much new information has become available and great deal of it has been incorporated into this new edition. This new and enlarged edition takes us to the end of 1946. It was in January of that year that John Lehman terminated his partnership with Leonard Woolf, which prompted Woolf to sell Lehman's share in the business to be sold to Chatto & Windus. Although Woolf continued to read manuscripts and called in at the Chatto & Windus offices in London on a regular basis, his active participation in running the firm declined from that point on. Between 1917 and the end of 1946, the Hogarth Press published 525 titles. Detailed information is given for each of these titles as well as for the two periodicals published by the Press. This edition contains more detailed… Read More

London: Golden Cockerel, 1952. Copy number 348/360. Hardback. 80pp. Half bound in pink and blue-grey cloth and gilt decoration to upper board and spine. Top edge gilt. Printed on Arnold's mould-made paper in Caslon's Old Face type. Eight aquatints by John Buckland-Wright. Phyllis Hartnoll (Newdigate prize winner, poet and scholar) has turned to the beauties of the classical scene, and recreates a legend that moves from the known city of Syracuse to the imagined horrors of undiscovered Africa. Here she weaves a tale that mingles the ecstasy and heart break of young lovers, the sunshine and shadow of their April love that triumphs over all obstacles and outfaces death. The writing has inspired a series of brilliant aquatints engraved and etched by John Buckland-Wright. A really lovely book with the original Prospectus loosely inserted. Book in near fine condition. Just an occasional very minor mark to covers and very slight toning to endpapers.
