CONDITION: The first three are very good-near fine -- clean, tight copies with only very minor edge-wear. The fourth is similar internally, but covers are lightly toned, with a small bit of rubbing in lower front.

Very g ood; corners bumped and rubbed, light wear to edges; spine label beginning to peel at top edge but still fully intact. Former owne r's bookplate and signature on front endpapers. .

Good. 1st edition; London: Macmillan & Co., 1882. Pictorial boards with cloth spine. Illustrations by George Cruikshank – note that th is is not THE George Cruikshank, but his nephew. Interior is clea n and tight. The covers are rubbed at edges, more heavily so at c orners. .

The book i s clean and tight with no interior defects. Back cover is perfect . Front cover has some light rubbing along top edge and left side by the spine. Dust jacket has a 1" closed tear and a 2" crease o n the bottom of back. All in all a very nice attractive copy. .

Viking Press. 1972. 1st edition (1972) of this Caldecott Medal winner, signed by illu strator Leonard Baskin in red ink on the front end paper. The boo k itself is in fine condition. The dust jacket has a 3/4" closed tear at front top, a 1/4" closed tear at rear top and a 2" water stain in lower right front corner. The water stain does not affec t the book. .

He developed a love for Mexic an culture when he used to sit and paint on Olvera Street and Pla za de Los Angeles. .

The facing pages have accompanying poems by English poet and songwriter Frederic Weatherly. A charming, and scarce, item with 8 chromolithographic color transformations, all in Very Good working order.
CONDITION: Good-. Notoriously prone to wear, the covers are fair at best, with moderate soiling and severely cracked hinges that are nearly detached from the text block; numerous edge tears in the end papers which are also toned. Illustrated in color on every page based in part be her drawings from the Almanacks. This copy differs from all other copies we have seen; the front cover is white, not red. Unknown if this is a variant edition or a later printing - in all other r espects it is the same as other copies we have seen. The back co ver is red and blue, as usual. Front cover soiled with loose thre ads at top and bottom edges. Back cover lightly soiled at top of spine edge with 1” fray on spine. Interior has some yellowing a nd light dam staingin but over all quite clean. .

The classic children’s novel about the trials of life, wisdom, and understanding. . he first edition. The imprint at the bottom of spine was first p rinted at 1/16” height. The second state binding increased it from 1/16” type to 1/8” type and both the second and third st ates made small text changes to pages 325 and 327. These two cop ies correspond to BAL varieties 4A and 4B. Copy 4A is fair: ligh t damp-staining to covers, light edgewear, spine rubbed and a ½⠀ partial split at bottom of front hinge; lightly cocked. 4B is Good+: several small spots on back cover, extremities very lightl y rubbed; front gutter cracked; internally very good. .

This copy is with the special reinforced library binding, as originally issued. A pristine copy in near f ine d/w. The book itself is flawless; the jacket is lightly soil ed at edges and is price-clipped. .

In addi tion to the copy at UCLA, the only other reported copy is at the Cleveland Public Library and is bound with another chapbook.
