Dealings With The Dead; The Human Soul, Its Migrations and its Transmigrations. Penned by the Rosicrucian

By [RANDOLF, Paschal Beverly]

Utica, NY: M. J. Randolph, 1861-1862. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 268, [4] p. 19 cm. Brown cloth hardcover with blank impressing. Cloth chipped at spine ends. Edges and corners worn. Front hinge cracked internally with front board separating from text block. Front free endpaper missing. Ink inscriptions on endpapers. Stain and specks on text block edges and stains to margins within. Small tear in first page of Introduction. Paschal Beverly Randolph (1825 – 1875) was a mixed-race doctor, occultist, spiritualist, and writer. He was probably the first person to introduce the principles of "sex magic" to North America and established the earliest known Rosicrucian order in the United States. This, his most comprehensive work on occult philosophy, explains the process of "blending" or channelling "disincarnate" entities. During his colourful career, he served on the National Convention of Colored Men, recruited black soldiers for the Union Army, set up a school for black adults in New Orleans, and was received at the White House by President Andrew Johnson. Nevertheless, his occult leanings made him unpopular and misunderstood by both the white and black communities.

Symbolism of Odd-Fellowship

By FORD, W[illiam] Henry

Providence, Rhode Island: William Henry Ford, 1904. Hardcover. Very good. xvi, 17-278p. 23.5 cm. Red cloth hardcover binding with gold impressing on spine and front board. Includes 108 illustrations. Frontispiece photograph of the author. Staining and soiling to cover. Foxing to endpapers and fly leaf. Minor wear to extremes of spine and edges of boards. Pages clean. Book lays flat when opened. Text clear and unmarked. Very good condition. The Odd-Fellows were a secret society (or fraternity) founded in the late-nineteenth century. The author, industrialist William Henry Ford, was associated with many spiritualist movements in North America including Madame Blavatsky's Theosophical Society and the Odd-Fellows. This book is an alphabetized reference text outlining the symbolic meaning and purposes of various objects, colours, plants, and art works. Ford's spiritualist beliefs were incredibly controversial during his lifetime and remain so due to the anti-Semitic propaganda promoted by many of these groups. The Independent Order of Odd-Fellows, however is remembered as a benevolent society that taught its members principles of friendship, love, truth, faith, hope, charity and universal justice. A fantastic reference guide for anyone researching, or simply seeking to better understand, late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century occult practices.
