Edinburgh, Scotland: Edmonston and Douglas, 1870. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Offered despite condition problems because of the scarcity of this edition Quarto, 11 1/4" tall, 21 pages plus 6 full-page b&w illustrations by Jane Blackburn, plus the illustrated title page. This is a fair copy overall with the original beveled pictorial boards quite soiled, scratched, and worn through at all edges; the binding is broken with the back strip missing. The internal condition is good, generally clean, with some light sporadic finger soiling, paper light to moderately yellowed, with signatures still holding to binding. Black and white illustrations are in very good condition, lightly yellowed, with occasional finger marks primarily at the outer margins. Previous owner's signature with the date on the front endpaper.

Title page says "second Edition, with sixteen coloured illustrations" Octavo, 6 3/4" tall, 160 pages + unfortunately only 15 color plates (counted), gilt fore-edges, gilt titles, decorative green cloth with beveled edges. A good, clean hardcover edition overall with general shelf wear, cloth worn to the boards at the fore-tips, starting to fray at the top and bottom edges of the spine, BUT binding is broken and all signatures loose, paper generally clean and lightly yellowed (a few small finger marks). Terrific bright color illustrations. A good copy is only for the contents, not the binding.
