New York: Assouline, 2011 Elephant folio. First edition. Publisher's pale green cloth, lettered in gilt to front board and spine, bright yellow endpapers, illustrated with numerous color photos by Laziz Hamani; in the publisher's pictorial paper slipcase. A very good copy, some light soiling to boards and sunning to spine, else very clean and bright; in a very good slipcase with wear to extremities. Overall, a beautiful copy of this copiously illustrated non-fiction text. Published to commemorate the 550th anniversary of the opening of the Turkish Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, this book contains photographs and text that illustrate the rich history of the market and its vendors. The Grand Bazaar, opened in 1461, was originally intended to encourage trade in what was then Constantinople, under the newly established reign of the Ottoman Empire. Textile traders set up stalls in the covered Byzantine structure, and the building was a hub for locals and visitors alike. Over time, the market grew to… Read More

Description:
1967 August 31, 1967. From Harry S. Truman to former Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snyder. One page typed on Truman's personal letterhead and signed by Truman in black ink. Fine tri-folded letter, with just a light rust mark from a paperclip and a couple of very light and tiny spots to verso. Overall, a beautiful letter. In this letter, Harry S. Truman replies to his former Secretary of the Treasury, John W. Snyder, informing him that his assistant Rose Conway "found no record of my having any personal appointments with Speaker Sam Rayburn or Vice President Barkley on the 25th or 26th of June 1950." The end of June 1950 was a very significant moment in U.S. - and world - history, marking the beginning of the Korean War. On June 25th, 1950, 90,000 communist troops from North Korea invaded South Korea along the 38th parallel. Two days later Truman made the announcement that he was sending U.S. air and naval forces to aid South Korea. Harry S. Truman was the 33rd President of the United States, and… Read More

Description:
1941 Atlanta, GA: August 2, 1941. From author Margaret Mitchell to Marion County Circuit Judge Leonard H. McMahan. One page, signed "Margaret Mitchell Marsh." Very good letter, with usual tri-fold, some tiny holes and some light surface wear to top edge of letter, and a tiny bit of dampstaining to recto. Overall, a handsome letter, with unique and inspiring content. In this letter, Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind (1936), thanks McMahan for sending her a book on Crater Lake and "The Brimfield Heroine Letter," which is a 66-year-old woman's account of her journey on the Oregon Trail. The latter item sparks an inspiring paragraph from Mitchell, in which she writes: "When we read such records of courage and endurance how can we doubt the future of our country and our people? I do not hold with the prevalent idea that we have become soft or frightened. Endurance and courage are still in our bones. The trouble nowadays is that most people have not been bred up to expect endurance, but if the… Read More
