There is a 3/4" split at top of upper joint, some minor extremity bumps, a few rubs, and some surface soil. Else very good to near fine.. Dr. Johannes Bohn was a noted 17th century German physician, professor of medicine, and pioneer in forensic science. He introduced the policy of thorough autopsies of the deceased. Bohn's specialty was the investigation of lethal wounds, which is what this book is about. <br /> <br /> In this treatise Dr. Bohn analyzes purposeful vs accidental fatal wounds. It is one of the relatively few important works to survive Bohn's stipulation in his will that his scientific writings be burnt. <br /> <br /> Bound in full vellum with title page printed in red and black. Spine titled by hand in ink. Text is in Latin.

Black and white photographs. Systematic description of the sulci and gyri of the brain of the distinguished mathematician, Charles Babbage (1791-1871). Babbage is considered the father of computers, and this study of his brain was part of a project to gather data on the brains of exceptional individuals. Babbage's brain is at the Hunterian Museum in London. Illustrated with photographs of its dissection.

Bound in blue cloth over boards with spine stamped in gilt, upper board in blind. A hint of fading toward top edge of upper board. Jacket has a whisper of lightening to spine, a 1/2" (or less) crisply closed tear near top fore corner of front panel, and a few other tiny spots of wear to extremities.. Inscribed and signed by Watson on preliminary blank leaf. Here is Watson's story of his work with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins--the three merging data from chemistry, physics, and biology--to solve the molecular structure of DNA, for which they were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in 1962.<br /> <br /> An inscribed and signed copy of one of the major scientific works of the 20th century.

Scarce entry form for the $25,000 Ortieg Cross-Atlantic Flight Prize, which was ultimately won by Charles Lindbergh in 1927. Augustus Post of the Aero Club of America approached hotelier Raymond Orteig to sponsor the prize, which he did. The prize was to be awarded to any aviator who completed a non-stop flight between New York and Paris, in either direction, within 5 years of the announcement of the prize in May, 1919. <br /> <br /> When 5 years passed without a serious attempt, Orteig renewed the prize for another 5 years. This time several prominent and well-financed competitors emerged--several of whom were killed, crashed, or lost at sea. None was successful until the obscure and under-funded Lindbergh touched down outside of Paris after a 33 1/2 hour solo flight from New York's Roosevelt Field.<br /> <br… Read More

Bound in maroon cloth over boards with spine and upper board titled in gilt, illustration to upper board in black. Boards show minor extremity rubs and mild soiling, but hinges sound. Interior has a short taped at top inner margin of title page, some mild foxing and toning, else clean. A very good copy overall.. Numerous black and white illustrations. Fascinating book by a magician who worked with Alexander Hermann and Prof. Kellar. Robinson had been raised as a spiritualist but no longer acknowledged the truth of its teachings.<br /> <br /> He was not hostile to spiritualism or those who believed in it, but was determined to expose those who would defraud believers seeking knowledge of deceased loved ones. His background in stage magic made him an ideal debunker of clever tricks.

Uncommon original silver gelatin panoramic photograph of the Ohio crash of the U. S. Navy's first rigid airship, the USS Shenandoah. The Shenandoah encountered a severe storm over Ohio on the morning of September 3, 1925, the violent updraft of which quickly carried the ship to an altitude that ruptured her gas bags and resulted in turbulence that broke the ship into three pieces. <br /> <br /> This photograph shows the aft section of the ship, in which 18 crewmen survived the crash. The Shenandoah was on her 57th flight, intended as a promotional visit to the Midwest from her home base at Lakehurst, New Jersey. <br /> <br /> Lakehurst-based photographer Rell Sam Clements, known for his panoramic photographs, apparently captured this image a short time after the crash, as souvenir hunters would soon… Read More
