Original first issue with the address on the title page marked through in ink. Accompanied by an original 3 X 5 mailing card for a subscription to Health News magazine. Original navy cloth features title and author in gilt surrounded by highly ornate decoration in blind. A very early and important book on the benefits of exercise, massage, calorie watching and the importance of "raw" food. Important to note that OCLC records only "1" copy of this book in institutional holdings (The Library of Congress). DJ trimmied about an eighth of an inch at top. Foxing and bit of insect erosion to DJ. A RARE FIND!

New York: The American Cancer Society, 1956. First Edition, First Printing. Original wraps. Good +. 7 7/8 X 10 1/4 Inches. 322 PP. Original stiff wraps with brown cloth binding. One of the very first serious meetings / studies that addressed the link between cigarettes and lung cancer. The researchers presenting here were among the first to study the link and would go on to became the catalysts of the "Stop-Smoking Movement" in America. Of note are the contributions of E. Cuyler Hammond and Daniel Horn who presented their research findings on the link between tobacco and cancer at this annual meeting. While we do find several of these reports held by institutions, they seem rare on the open market. <br /> <br /> Wear to edges and corners. A few pencil notes to first page. First printing of one of the earliest books on the diabetes epidemic that plagues America. Written only three years after the development of insulin, Macfadden throws his hat in the ring to explain the causes and cure for diabetes. While I am no expert, eating properly (and not as much), being mostly vegetarian and/or vegan and exercising daily seem like pretty good baselines that have stood the test of time. Macfadden is credited with developing and promoting the national wave of health and fitness in America that continues to spread and grow, even after nearly 100 years. An extremely important book in the very scarce original dust jacket. A bit of scuffing and rubbing, else a fine copy.

First printing with complete number line to the "1" on the copyright page. Interesting look at modern epidemics and their influences on culture and literature. The book not only brings to light the physical damage done by epidemics such as Polio and AIDS, but there longer lasting imprint on art and literature. Can't wait to see the future of this connection in a world stained by COVID.

Interestingly, he describes the game as "an imperfect form of cricket," but also clearly states that it was "a Yankee Invention."<br /> <br /> Alfred Elwyn was a physician, author, philanthropist and pioneer in the care of the mentally ill in the United States. He was a founding officer of the Pennsylvania Institution for the Blind. This book was intended to show the reader that the vast majority of his included "Americanisms" found their origin elsewhere. Original embossed cloth binding with gilt title-stamping to spine. Spine a bit sunned. A hint of foxing. Book clean, tight and free of any writing, plates, etc... An exceptional copy considering how one normally encounters this often used and often quoted book.

Scarce "POLIO" issue of the Prudential Health Series of pamphlets issued in the late 40's and 50's. Handy eight page illustrated booklet on Polio and how to treat the disease (as best you could). Original stapled wraps. OCLC locates only "ONE" copy.

Freeport, IL: W.T. Rawleigh Medical Company, 1912. First Edition. Original wraps. Very Good. 5 3/4 X 8 3/4 Inches. 64 PP. Original staple wraps. In general, this booklet is the typical advertising vehicle of the time. Much of the book is filled with ads for Rawleigh's many "medicinal" products and for their Memphis and Chester, PA factories. Apparently, Rawleigh's elixirs could heal everything from Swamp Fever to Dandruff. Basic recipes for cakes, pies, game and sauces. Light toning to pages. Scuffing to covers and wear at edges. An attractive copy overall.
