Endpapers are of the figure of Good Deeds and the pledge of her sister Knowledge to Everyman in the medieval play, designed by Reginald L. Knowles and used from 1906-34; binding style is from The Shield Era 1928-34. A lovely little set.

Clipped jacket has crease line lower front and otherwise fine; volume is fine without marks, tears etc. Beverley Nichols (1898–1983) was a prolific writer, playwright, pianist, songwriter, actor, mystery writer, gardening expert, sparkling wit, bon vivant, cat champion and, a noted children's author writer. For decades he was inescapable on the British literary and social scene. He knew and was lauded by many of the leading lights of his day Osbert Sitwell described Beverley Nichols as the original "bright young thing."

First Edition. 2 Volumes. 4to up to 12" tall; lxiv, 504, viii, 523pp., illustrated with 102 photographs plates. Green cloth with gilt spine titles. Name and place (Scotland) to pastedown, light outer edge browning and otherwise contents are in fine condition. Striations to spine and otherwise boards show little wear and binding is tight. This most popular classic was written by Farrer in 1913, but its publication was delayed until 1919, after the end of World War I. Considered the standard tome on rock gardens, it has been reprinted several times. Reginald Farrer (1880–1920), known as the 'Prince of Alpine gardeners' was a plant hunter who made an invaluable contribution to alpine gardening authoring over twenty books and countless articles.
