Description:
Charlotte Bronte and Victorian Psychology (Cambridge Studies in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture) Shuttleworth, Sally. Published by Cambridge University Press, 1996. Printed 1999. xiv, 289 pages including index. Blue scalloped boards with black titles front and spine. In unread condition without marks, tears or folds; lacks dustjacket. This ground-breaking study successfully challenges the traditional tendency to regard Charlotte Bronte as having existed in a historical vacuum. Using texts ranging from local newspapers to medical tomes belonging to the Brontes', Sally Shuttleworth explores Victorian constructions of psychology, sexuality and insanity, and traces the ways in which Charlotte Brontë's texts operate in relation to this complex framework. Shuttleworth offers a reading of Brontë's fiction informed by a new understanding of the psychological debates of her time.

Dreadful Pleasures: An Anatomy of Modern Horror, Twitchell, James B. Published by Oxford University Press, 1985. First Edition. 385pp. with notes, bibliography and index. Quarter red cloth over red boards. Volume is in unread condition; jacket is clipped with rub to head of spine and toning inside flaps and rear panel. James Twitchell traces our fascination with horror from the cave paintings at Lascaux to the "slasher" movies today.
Twitchell finds that three particular stories have had a special resonance in our culture: the bloodsucker (Dracula), the deformed creature (Frankenstein), and the transformation monster (The Wolfman, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde). Why have these stories persisted to the point of becoming mythic and to the exclusion of others? Insightful, provocative, and entertaining; film buffs and scholars, literary critics and devotees of the Gothic novel will all welcome this study.

Very light shelf wear to jacket; volume pristine and unread. In World Stages, Dickinson suggests that the forms of intimacy and identification that come from being part of the public of a local performance, provide a potential model for rethinking our roles as world citizens. Using his own experience of recent theatrical practice in Vancouver as a starting point, Dickinson maps the spaces of connection and contestation, the flows of sentiment and social responsibility, produced by different communities in response to global sports spectacles. He also analyses how such topics are taken up in the work of playwrights, conceptual, installation, and performance artists like Ai Weiwei, and Rebecca Belmore. In so doing, Dickinson makes an original… Read More
