Local Heroes: Paintings and Sculpture by Sam Doyle

By Spriggs, Lynne E.

Atlanta, Georgia: High Museum of Art, 2000. First Edition . Softcover. Fine/No Jacket As Issued. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Softcover. Clean and bright without bumps, bookplates, inscriptions or markings other than minimal soiling to page edges. 48 pp. Catalogue to accompany the exhibition 'Local Heroes: Paintings and Sculpture by Sam Doyle' at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, from July 8 to October 14, 2000. Sam Doyle (1906-1985) lived on St. Helena Island, off the coast of South Carolina. He was part of Gullah culture which is an amalgam of Western and Central African traditions mingled with those of a variety of Caribbean cultures. During the later years of his life, Doyle created portraits of anyone who "jumbled" his mind, that is, inspired him, as a means of expressing pride and investment in his cultural heritage. He displayed these portraits in his yard and created an ongoing history lesson for anyone who happened to pass by. Some of those portraits and the stories they evoke constituted this exhibition - the first large-scale retrospective of Sam Doyle's work.
