[CRAIK (Dinah Maria Mulock)]: THE FAIRY BOOK. The Best Popular Fairy Stories selected and rendered anew. London: Macmillan, 1863. Circular title=page vignette by J Noel Paton showing a prince discovering a sleeping princess. Square 8vo, xi 368pp + [8] advert catalogue; original gilt pictorial green cloth, small fraying to upper right spine but overall a FINE COPY. First edition comprising 36 fairy tales retold from the writings of Perrault, Mme d'Aulnoy, the Bros Grimm, &c. The editor is best remembered for her John Halifax, Gentleman (1856) but she also wrote several children's books of her own: Adventures of a Brownie, The Little Lame Prince, &c. Her husband was George Lillie Craik, a partner in Macmillan's publishing company and Lewis Carroll's editor. An inscribed copy of the rarefied 1865 Alice's Adventures In Wonderland was given through her husband and is now in the rare books collection of Princeton University.

In some instances various versions have been collated, compared and combined. In all, there is no moral lesson to be learnt that cannot be self-understood from the text.

Original pen-and-ink illustration for the book "At The Back of the North Wind" by George Macdonald (p. 151; London: Strahan & Co., 1871).
Measures 3-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches.
Arthur Hughes (1832-1915) was an English painter and illustrator associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Accompanied with a copy of the First American edition of the book (New York: Routledge, 1871), published after the British original.

BEWICK FAMILY COPY, signed twice by Thomas Bewick (one dated 1784) in addition to childish scribbling.Provenance: Bewick bookplate identified as Dr C Clark Collection (Alnwick), also inscribed in pencil as a gift from Jane Bewick to E P Jupp, 1877.
