It is issued as an expression of the appreciation of Doctor Allen's life work by the Trustees of The American Museum of Natural History and devoted colleagues on its Scientific Staff. The biographical sketch was especially desired in connection with the Bibliography because it sets forth so clearly the broad groundwork of travel, of field observation and of field record which has established a model of all modern American work on the birds and the mammals..." 215 pp. most uncut at top edge. 1915. Reprinted from Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society. Vol. LIV, No. 218, August, 1915. " Stratigraphers do not agree as to the conditions under which the black bituminous shales so often met with in American Paleozoic marine deposits were laid down. Among the more striking of such formations may be mentioned the Quebec, Martinsburg, Collingwood, Utica, Maquoketa, Genesee-Portage, Ohio, Chattanooga, and Caney, formations ranging from the Ordovician to the Pennsylvanian. To aid in the interpretation of such black shales, the writer presents herewith the main results set forth by Professor J. F. Pompeckj, of the University of Tubingen, in a publication that wll not be of wide distribution in America. The following is a decided condensation and in part a free translation of his exhaustive paper, which is replete with bibliographic references." pp.259-269. ex-mus. stamp on front cover. slight fading to covers, otherwise VG+.
