"This is a memoir of places lived in and loved, stayed at length in, visited briefly, places dreamed about. . . The places here remembered have, mostly, disappeared. . . In these sketches and stories I have tried to suggest how things were, not only for me but for characters in their landscapes, those for whom these places were home." There are chapters on "homeplaces" in 1930s Alabama and Iowa, postwar Manhattan, other cities, towns, and farms. Part II, "Poetics of Travel," ranges from bicycling in postwar Europe to visits during half a century to Sicily, Ireland, Yugoslavia, and the Isle of Canna in the Hebrides. Massingham. 4-1/2" x 6-3/4", dark blue buckram with gilt lettering and decorative pattern on spine, top edge decoratively tinted blue, corners sharp, foot of spine shelf-worn, in soiled DJ with wear, small tears and chipping at its corners. "August 1962" and name of former owner Prof. Warner Berthoff on ffep, with his notation "from library of Bettina Linn." Miss Linn (1905-1962), author and professor of English, was Berthoff's colleague at Bryn Mawr. First American edition of this translation of collected autobiographical and other prose sketches by the Italian poet who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1975. These were written as vignettes for a Milan newspaper beginning in 1948 and first published in Italian in 1956, with additional sketches in 1961 and 1969 editions. 8vo, deep yellow cloth with brown lettering on spine, foxing/dust soil to top edge and top board edges, back board slightly bowed, otherwise practically no visible wear. This is a poignant and clear-eyed memoir of the Great Depression, by an American woman who became well-educated (graduating from Vassar, being in the circle of F.O. Mattheissen at Harvard) despite the hardships of her childhood. She relates the pre-history of the loss of her father, and her courageous mother's battle to save her family and, eventually, earn her degree in theology and ordination as a minister.
