Description:
Worcester, Massachusetts: Leonard Worcester, 1793. 346, 84 pages. David Brainerd was a missionary among Native Americans in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and near Easton, Pennsylvania. In 1746 he published the first portion of his diaries about his experiences. After Brainerd died of tuberculosis at Edwards' home in 1748, Edwards edited and published the remaining portions of the diaries. This Worcester edition reprinted both. The book was recently and sympathetically rebound in full dark brown morocco with a red title patch, new but not obtrusive endpapers, and appropriate blind tooling. The first and last few leaves are browned and tender along the edges; the remaining pages are lightly tanned but quite supple. There is a triangle of faint waterstaining in the margins of many pages. Much nicer than it sounds--a better than acceptable copy of two important pieces of Americana (Wright Howes E56 and B717).. Early Printing. Hardcover. London and New York: Thomas Coke and Daniel Hitt, 1801. Complete in 6 volumes. Volumes 1-4, the commentary on the Old Testament, are the true first edition, printed for Thomas Coke in London 1801-1803. Volumes 5 and 6, the commentaries on the New Testament, are the first American edition, published by Daniel Hitt in New York in 1812.. Thomas Coke (1747-1814), an Anglican priest who converted to Methodism, became John Wesley's "right-hand man" in the Methodist Church. He was especially active in establishing the church in countries other than England. He was President of the Methodist Church of Ireland several times, but his most important interest was the United States to which he traveled nine times between 1784 and 1803. Coke and Francis Asbury were elected as the first superintendents of the American Methodist Church. After the death of Wesley, Coke expected to be named Bishop (at that time there was only Bishop in the entire Church), but the Methodist Conference, while electing him as… Read More

London: D. Brown, at the Black-Swan Without Temple-Bar; J. Walthoe, in Vine-Court, Middle-Temple; and W. Mears, at the Lamb in Chancery-Lane, 1710. 2 p.l., [14], 231, [1] pages. Illustrated with nine (9) full-page copperplate engravings by Joseph Nutting. Note: the frontispiece is plate 3 of Nutting's illustrations rather than the portrait of Dunster that should be the frontispiece but is missing. Drexelius was professor of humanities and rhetoric at Augsburg and Dillengen as well as court preacher to the Elector of Bavaria. CONSIDERATIONS ON ETERNITY was probably his most significant book. This translation, which was published in multiple 18th and 19th century editions, is by Samuel Dunster, Prebendary of Sarum & chaplain to Lord Maynard and later Vicar of Rochdale. Recently rebound in dark brown sheepskin, with most of the original beautifully tooled front and back panels laid down, and with new endpapers. Five raised bands with red leather title patch. Description:
Philadelphia: Beck & Lawton, 1857. Folio (13 1/2 " X 10 1/4"). Original sheet music on 6 pages. Cover art is an original stone lithograph by Philadelphia lithographers Schnabel & Finkeldey. Francis Florentine Hagen (1815-1907) was the Moravian minister who wrote the music for this hymn, which traditionally has been performed in Moravian churches on Christmas Eve. Hagen wrote the music sometime between 1836 and 1854, but this 1857 sheet music appears to be the first published edition. Martin Houser's translation from the German poem appears to have been used only in the first edition. Later editions include significantly different lyrics by a different translator. That may help to explain why this sheet music is so SCARCE, especially with this lithograph on the cover--WorldCat locates only two copies in libraries. The condition is about very good: the 3 leaves of sheet music are disbound, with minimal roughness along the binding edge (primarily from the stab Holes) and with a one inch closed… Read More

Description:
London: Robert Barker, the King's Printer, 1611. Single leaf from S. Matthew, containing chapter 24 in its entirety as well as portions of chapters 23 and 25. Because the 1611 and 1617 editions of the King James Bible are virtually identical, it is difficult to definitively state that this leaf is from 1611 rather than 1617. Both are rare, although there are almost three times as many copies of the 1611 edition extant; so it is statistically more likely that my attribution is correct. Leaves from the New Testament KJV are uncommon, especially from one of the Gospels. This leaf is in reasonably good condition, with some faint water staining and a small chip limited to the margin in one corner. There is one 5-inch closed tear. The leaf is sealed in (but not adhered to) a protective plastic sleeve, with a metal grommet at the top edge.. First Edition. Single Sheet. Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Manuscript.

New York: Mason Brothers, 1853. 192 pages. Illustrated with in-text wood engravings. Binding is embossed brown cloth, with gilt lettering on front cover. Hiram Mattison (1811-1868) was a prominent Methodist minister in New York, who, in addion to his opposition to fraudulent psychics, was an active proponent of temperance and abolition of slavery. In this book he debunks his era's fad of "spirit-rapping" and other practices by which mediums or spiritualists claim to communicate with the dead. As Mattison states in the preface, spirit-rapping "is the grand climax of soothsaying, astrology, witchcraft, phrenology, mesmerism, clairvoyance, Psychology, Fourierism, Millerism, Mormonism, and all other superstitions, delusions, and isms that have ever been, or probably ever will be."
