Hanford, Washington: General Electric Hanford Atomic Products Operation and United States Atomic Energy Commission, 1957. 60 pages. The 1957 telephone directory for all offices and more than 1500 employees of the Hanford Works, one of the earliest nuclear research facilities in the United States. Front cover states "For official use only". Quotation from the Atomic Energy Commission Manual on back cover: "Classified defense information shall not be discussed in telephone conversations". Dearborn, Michigan: Edison Institute, 1937. 1167 pages in 3 volumes. Volume 1 is a second edition dated 1937; volume 2 perhaps is a second printing--dated 1938 with the "eight" effaced and replaced with a pinted "nine"; volume 3 is a 1941 first printing. Bound in the original green cloth, with gilt lettering on spines and front covers. These reminiscences of Thomas A. Edison's former laboratory assistant are a history of Edison and electricity from 1878 to 1929. All 3 volumes are clean and tight with light toning of pages. As usual the gilt lettering on the spine of vol 2 is somewhat faded, though still legible. Previous owner's signature and date written on front pastedown endpapers.. Mixed Editions. Hardcover. Edited by 2 of the leading figures in theoretical physics: Vernon Hughes of Yale University won the Davisson-Germer Prize in Atomic Physics, the Rumford Prize, and the Tom W. Bonner Prize in Nuclear Physics. Chien-Shiung Wu of Columbia University worked on the Manhattan Project and was the first winner of the Wolf Prize in Physics. Illustrated with a map of Teneriffe and 20 original albumen stereoviews by Smyth. With the Lowell Reeve catalogue dated January 1858, this is the first state of the first edition, one of 1,000 copies printed in January. Charles Piazzi Smyth, Scottish Royal Astronomer, travelled to Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, to make astronomical, meteorological, and geological observations using a telescope on Mount Guajara. His scientific observations were reported in "Philosophical Transactions" and this book was his popular account of the expedition. Octoraro, Pennsylvania: Francis Bailey, 1807. viii, 364 pages + 25 plates (some folding). 8vo. Oliver Evans was largely responsible for early automation in the American milling industry. Among those licensed to use his patented devices was George Washington, and many of the mills built in the early 19th century were based on Evans' designs. Part five of the book and its accompanying plates are by Thomas Ellicott, whose family were the largest flour mill owners in Maryland. Preceded only by the now rare 1795 first edition, this second edition was printed by Lancaster County printer Francis Bailey, who is best known for the printing of the first complete official edition of the Articles of Confederation. Second edition of the book described by William Reese as "the first American book on mills and milling machines and a landmark of early American technology" (Federal Hundred, #50).
