Description:
Washington, DC: Printed by Jno. T. Towers, 1850. Pamphlet. 16 pp., unbound. 9.75 x 6.25 in. Two old horizontal folds. Printed and folded, but unbound, uncut, and edges untrimmed; can easily be unfolded into a full sheet. Textual record of a debate on January 30, 1850, regarding a resolution proposed by William H. Seward (future Secretary of State under Lincoln, but then in his first year as senator) to award public lands to Hungarian exiles who sought refuge in the United States from the defeated Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Seward shows much sympathy for the Hungarians, insisting that the gift of land would show support to immigrant freedom-seekers who further were engaged in a war for independence not unlike that upon which the United States of America was founded. Some opposition was based on other proposals inspired by the 1848 uprising calling to sever diplomatic relations with Austria; others opposed on the grounds that the lands were to be sold to pay off debts incurred during the war with Mexico.
