Disbound, we see stab-holes for thread but no thread, folded leaves are nested without imminent risk of damage, somewhat worn and dusty otherwise, with faintly toned paper, a good but paradoxically as-is copy.

New York: Lange and Hillman, 1870. vii, 268p, 5 x 7.5 inches, illus, ex library with bookplate attached to front paste-down endpaper, dark green endpapers, shelfworn brown cloth-bound boards with beveled edges and some fraying at corners, front hinge loose, spine with bumped edges stamped in gilt and a hospital tent scene in gilt on the front board, tissue guard covering frontispiece portrait of Wheelock has large tear, date in blue pencil on a blank front page . Memoir of author's experiences as a nurse from 1862-1865 in Washington, D.C. including the death of her brother. Boys in white is a reference to the way the soldiers' bodies were prepared for burial. Julia S. Wheelock Freeman (1833 - 1900) , a Michigan native, spent three years in Washington, DC nursing injured Civil War veterans as a volunteer with the Michigan Soldiers Relief Association. The US House of Representatives recognized Wheelock Freeman for her service as "a brave woman, a patriot in the highest sense of the term.

Hardcover. ix, 134p., illustrated with numerous b&w period photographs, 8.5x8 inches, second printing, hardbound in 8x9 inch blue boards with a wide black cloth backstrip lettered in blue and gilt. Item is enclosed in its dust jacket. Book itself is entirely sound, clean and unmarked; the dj, while quite presentable, has two short marginal tears which we have tacked with verso tape. A very good copy.

Kyoto: Takehara Yoshibē, 1863. Folded map with external boards, 27x19.5 inches when unfolded, minor wear at the creases, very good. A woodblock-printed depiction of Kyoto at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Hardcover. 480p., brown cloth boards; frontis., boards soiled and edgeworn with some exposure on corners, chip along spine tail, endpapers somewhat soiled and front free endpaper partially detached, gilt spine dimmed and slightly tilted, foxing throughout, front hinge cracked and back hinge delicate.

Paris: Maison Martinet, 1863. Paperback. [16] ll., illustrations, wraps. 10 x 7.25 in. Covers dusty; left corner of rear cover creased. Leaves spotted. Printed on rectos only. Colophon: "Imp. Simon Raçon et Comp., rue d'Erfurtii, 1.". Sixteen leaves of lithographic plates satirizing the Salon de Refuses 1863. The French Academy of Fine Arts rejected many artists for the 1863 salon, leading a special salon of "refused art" open to the public. There are four different comic-like illustrations with captions to each page, plus a vignette on the title page.

New York: William-Frederick Press, 1958. Pamphlet. 40p., wraps. 8.5x5.5 in. Very Good. Family history of the Van Hornes, with an emphasis on Elizabeth, whose father was an Army chaplain; the family was stationed in Alaska shortly after its purchase by the US government in 1867.

Montreal: Published by C. R. Chisholm, Railway and Steamboat News Agent, 1868. Hardcover. 66p., text with profuse wood-engraved scenery and sites, 7x4.5 inch hard covers embellished in blind and gilt (gilt very dim). The Panorama is removed, leaving a thick stubbed gutter that would have accommodated it. Cloth casing is imperfect - not too bad, but.. immaterial, because we are offering the item "as is" for its singleton images only.

Washington DC: Weed, Parsons & Co., Printers, 1864. Pamphlet. 16p., sewn pamphlet in 8.5x5.5 inch self-wraps, somewhat foxed with small light penciled numerals in one corner, free of any other markings and quite sound, a very good copy. Union Campaign Docs., No. 4. Criticizes the Copperheads and praises the War Democrats who supported the Union along with the Republicans.

Edo: Kinrindo Seishichi. 金鱗堂清七, 1866. Five prints joined together, mounted on a later scroll, total 48x14 inches. Numerous ownership seals, moderate spotting throughout, penultimate print has a rectangular stain at the center. A map-scroll depicting famous sites across the breadth of Japan.

Paris: Barilliere et Fils, 1860. Hardcover. 128 p., tables, boards. Bound in pebbled leather, gilt stamped title; all edges gilt. Large paper copy with extra wide margins. Possibly bound for presentation. First edition (reprinted later the same year) of this study on the (positive) influence of the Algerian climate on those suffering from chronic pulmonary illnesses (such as tuberculosis). The author was one of the medical doctors attached to Napoleon III. The report includes many tables, statistics, and sketches of life in Algiers, including mortality rates, nutrition, and dress. Closes by expressing a "debt of gratitude" to Algiers. The French invaded Algiers in 1830, and the area was still very much contested when this report was being compiled. French military expeditions into Algeria lasted until 1903. Algeria was a popular tourist destination for Europeans from the late 19th to early 20th century.

Hardcover. iv, 24p, ii, printed recto-only, 8.5x11 inches, color frontis-portrait tipped-in with printed tissue-guard, foreword, editor's note (reproduces notations by Irwin on arms and equipment), very good limited edition of 12 copies signed by the author's daughter and her husband who edited the book, reproduction of the original diary bound in black buckram cloth boards and gilt. Diary of a naval trainee's cruise aboard The Savannah.

San Diego: Los Hombres Press, 1993. Paperback. 205p., very good first edition trade paperback in pictorial wraps. The DC-based author is a member of P-FLAG (Parents-Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Sequel to her first novel which brings the characters to the Civil War.
