Masterpieces of Victorian Photography 1840-1900 from the Gernsheim Collection, Published by the Arts Council of Great Britain on the Occasion of the Festival of Britain

By James, Philip, foreword

London: the council, 1951. Pamphlet. 36p. + 16 plates on coated stock, 9x7 inch pamphlet stapled into color wraps. The matte cover is a bit toned, as is the text on unglazed stock (but less so), plates indifferently reproduced (though well-chosen), a good clean copy. James' foreword calls this "largest retrospective exhibition of Victorian photography ever staged"; vintage camera apparatus and illustrated books were part of the show, these partly described in final pages. This cataloguer was intrigued to find that microphotography, minute reproduction viewable only under high magnification (yes, dots! periods!) has been around since 1887 !
