New York on Fire

By Obenzinger, Hilton

Seattle: The Real Comet Press, 1989. Paperback. 144p., beautifully designed and printed on alkaline paperstock and illustrated with a large number of vignette period photos and drawings; oversize softbound, 11x7.5 inch glossy black and red wraps. One tiny corner-tip is bent, otherwise perfectly sound, clean and unmarked, a nice copy. Half-title has a scrawled inscription from Obenzinger, signed, and dated the year of publication. He works nonfiction into mild unorthodoxy with line-breaks --into modernist poetry in short that remains informative. Factual stuff organized by a poet. Commenced as a commercial project, write a book for a business concern, those who commissioned it went broke and Obenzinger re-fashioned his materials into this oddity endorsed by Dennis Smith, a notable writer on things (in)flamable, by fellow poets Ishmael Reed, Andrei Codrescu and Eduardo Galeano.

In Two Volumes. Vol I [and] Vol II. [complete in the two volumes]

By Venegas, Miguel

London: Printed for James Rivington and James Fletcher, 1759. Good sound set rebacked nicely; all text in English. The Spanish-language Venegas issue is Zamorano 78. Unpaginated preliminaries, 455, 387, folded map and 8 plates recto (all copperplate) on four leaves; textblock is sound and readily handled, and clean, with an occasional foxing trace and small smudges. The map is a crisp bright strike with a couple short closed marginal tears, while the plates, named below, are tepid and a trifle dim. The two volumes are well-matched and recased in all four of the original 8x5 inch polished calf boards, skived gracefully into the much newer calf spines on which the original (somewhat damaged) red leather labels have been laid down. All edges retain the first-issue red tint, though top edges have turned very dark. Hinges are perfectly functional if a little unsightly (endsheets somewhat messy but requiring preservation), One could have wished for filled-in hinge gutters and a better match-up of new and old hides, but the craftsmanship here is plainly very high. Both books bear the steel-engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Joseph Copley Baronet., and ingenious additional ownership notices on circular leather coin-sized "bookplates," a red and a black one, these aligned well with the much larger Copley's. Engraved images as follows: Women of Calif, Men of Calif, Cayote / Fox, Taye / Deer, Curing the Sick, Sorcerers, Martyrdom of Carranco, and of Tamaral.

By Buttner, David Sigismund

Leipzig: Johann Friedrich Braunen, 1710. Hardcover. [1] frontispiece, rubricated title page, [6] 314p., [18], Register, 30 plates, many folding; 8x6.5 inch text printed in German, fraktur font, ex-libris bookplate of American zoologist Charles Atwood Kofoid on front paste-down, signature of UC Berkeley student of Slavic Languages Benjamin Jack Pooler. Re-cased, probably early 20thC. The textblock (all edges tinted red) is original with two original blanks initial and terminal. This rebind incorporates very old marbled boards with vellum corner-tips, very edgeworn showing card, backed with an untitled binders'-tape spine; adhesive-tape hinges, but holding well. Leaves toned and bear light dust-smear, small pipe-coal burns and an ancient food smear. Expect readers' markings here and there, most especially light pencil and ink marks to rubricated title page including an arabesque doodle. First edition of a much-reprinted item that established the historicity of the Noaic Deluge through fossil evidence; the plates are in remarkably good condition, same toning and discolorations as with text paperstock. We see one short tear where a folded plate, no.7, was bound too close to the gutter...general good condition. Buttner's book on modern scientific proof of the Biblical Flood found in marine life, plants, and the contemporary state (1700s) of the Earth's waters.

The History of the Caliph Vathek, by William Beckford, Esq. Printed verbatim from first edition, with the original prefaces and notes by Henley

By Beckford, William

London: Sampson Low, Son, and Marston, 1900. Hardcover. x, 189p., 16 [ads], small limp hardbound item in cloth boards decorated in blind and gilt; all edges of textblock gilded; gilt is still bright except for spine panel, which is quite darkened with handling. Front hinge has a hairline crack. A good-only copy. Note that the titlepage is a rubricated, tissue-guarded facsimile (of an earlier book appearance) that misleadingly shows facsimile date of 1868. Our guess re this issue is as stated above, early 1900s. The 1970 (!) British edition is Young 222. Originally published in French and in English anonymously in 1786. "Orientalist" tale of Arabia and a Caliph who renounces Islam.

Oriental Eclogues. Decorations by Paul Forster

By Collins, William

San Francisco: The Windsor Press, 1932. Hardcover. 36 + [2]p., illustrated with five vignettes (tiny shepherds in tiny landscapes) with blue and gilt presswork; the sewn signatures are hardbound, 10.5x7 inch cloth boards & gilt-titled red morocco backstrip, no.86 of 150cc. Not well-preserved; the leather is chewed and chipped, the covers yawn and show handling soil. The textblock is sound and clean, the figures have survived nicely, but the casing's condition is off-putting. The printers, Cecil and James Johnson, appended a two-page appreciation of Collins, his eclogia and false "orientalism," which we do not share, he having fallen with a thump between Augustan and romantic ages. Collins wrote in the decades of Thomas Gray (Elegy in a Country Churchyard), who stayed closer to home.

By Smellie, William, M.D.

no city / London: The Classics of Obstetrics & Gynecology Library / D. Wilson and T. Durham, 1764. Modern facsimile in pressed leather boards, gilt-titled and decorated in period style; caveat emptor, may be "reconstituted" leather. All edges gilt (overbright) with faux marbled endpapers; on the plus side, text is quite legible for a facsimile: viii, 544p., index. A nice squat little volume in perfect condition. Note that volume III is widely available solo, it must be the most curious one, although there were plates but none here, these appearing in the earlier books. Special edition. "This special edition has been privatrely printed for the members of The Classics of Obstetrics & Gynecology Library by Quebecor Printing Kingsport. Film was prepared from the first edition of 1764.. Prince Mazepa, Hetman of Ukraine in contemporary English publications 1687-1709

By Mackiw, Theodore

Chicago: Ukrainian Research and Information Institute, Inc, 1967. 126p., sewn signatures printed on heavy glazed paperstock, softbound in 9x6 inch plain printed white wraps and a dust jacket; dj flaps bear vita and precis information that does not appear in the book. The glazed paper has invited some smudging in the text and a slightly smeared titlepage, the dj is faintly edgeworn, a very good copy. Vita unclear on one transition: "The end of World War II found him in Germany, where he served as head" of a documents search section of the US Army. Who'd he serve during hostilities? anyway, he wound up in Rhode Island.

no city, probably Connecticut: self published by compiler, 1901. Hardcover. 164p., pagination includes extensive appendices, a through g, each one separated by blanks (as for holograph notes?); find ephemera laid in, holograph letters &c from a Louisiana branch of the family (presumed).. Small hardbound, 8.5x5.5 inch tan cloth boards cover-titled in dark brown, top edge gilded, a little edgeworn but sound as regards casing; unfortunately, expense was spared on the guts: toned and very acidic fragile paperstock, titlepage partially detached, the sole and only leaf not at risk is the folded genealogy bound in between pp.64/5. A now sound but at-risk copy.
