Constitution By-laws and Rules of Order of Celestial Lodge No. 186, I.O.O.F.; Located at Decatur, Macon County, Ill

By [Independent Order of Odd Fellows]

Springfield: Odd Fellows Herald Print, 1927. 45p., 3.5x5.75 inches, worn and creased wraps, staples rusted, red pencil writing on title page, a reading copy. Writing on title page gives former owner's name and notes "ancient member of this order for near 60 yrs". The I.O.O.F is the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, at one time a popular fraternal organization rivaling the Freemasons in membership numbers. This is a well-worn reference booklet explaining how the order is organized and rules to be followed by members.

The Stanford Quad 1908 Vol. XIV [spine titling]; 1908 Quad Being The Year Book of the Junior Class. May 1907 [titlepage]

Palo Alto: Stanford University, 1907. 398p. plus numerous appended advertisements, printed on untrimmed extra-heavy clay-coated paperstock in sewn signatures and cased into red cloth boards decorated gilt and black. Class photos are tinted green, and the massive cardstock-weight frontispiece / titlepage is a nice one in colors, credited in the plate to Josephine E. Herron. Find an 18-page section of earthquake damage (1906) which was severe. The usual yearbook format but unusually lavish; the paper is so thick it is hard to manipulate, and the signatures are weakly fastened. Unfortunately little attention was paid to hinges on such a monster, these are cracked badly (rear hinge barely holding) under the weight of the enormous textblock, and other factors. Cloth boards are extensively frayed, rear joint split. First blank bears the ownership legend of one Ruth Swift, class of '08 but datelined May 10th 1907. A poor to fair copy; complete however, with no loose leaves.

San Francisco [46th session]: the order, 1910. Paperback. A benevolent, civic-minded society, nothing to do with anything at all druidical. First off, very musty, with some rusted staples and damp-staining. Particulars of the 46th session: 219p., paperbound in 9x6 inch printed purple wraps (color varies from year to year), lists members and programs, shows mug-shots; this is one of the worst-stained and most odorific, but remains handleable. Inaugural Address of Timothy Bigelow, W.P. of Crystal Fount Division, S. of T., No. 16, of Boston. Delivered January 8, 1875

By Bigelow, Timothy

Boston: Press of John Wilson and Son, for Sons of Temperance, 1875. Pamphlet. 10p., sewn signature in plain printed 9x5.5 inch pale green wraps. Bindery thread is holding nicely and looks sound, but wraps are quite dust-soiled and mildly damp-stained with a half-inch closed tear to front cover that lies along an otherwise mild vertical crease to entire item. Inside, text stock is toned with dusty margins and has small dog-ears. Reading copy. W.P. = worthy patriarch; S. of T. Sons of Temperance. It was expensive to join, membership was secret and required strenuous efforts to look after "fallen brothers" and their families. Bigelow's message appears to be florid commonplace uplift, which (per a prefatory note) was thought by certain members fit for the general public.
