Man Does Not Live by Bread Alone. An historical and religious review of Jewish hisroty from the Maccabeans to the Talmudic period [author's precis from vita]

By Rust, Ben

Richmond CA: Self-published by the author, 1975. Second edition of the self-published 1967 original, unrevised; 256p., text reproduced from a typewritten ms that incorporated author's handdrawn line maps and simple illustrations. Softbound, standard 11x8.5 inch leaves under a decorated construction-paper cover sheet and cloth backstrip. The typist (doubtless Mr Rust) expertly justified right-margins, and the copyshop binding was neat work. However, acidic materials and age have allowed the effort to go a little to seed with a two-inch split in the top joint and a shorter one at the tail. Paperstock is somewhat toned. A good reading copy. Ben Rust an unusual combination of academic and autodidact (self-taught amateur); his vita is impressive. This is perfectly reasonable history written with opinions more vividly expressed than is common in academia, see for example his criticism of Toynbee's Study of History in the very forthcoming bibliography. Rust is especially interested in the truthfulness of Josephus.
