Selected Works, Edited under the Supervision of Kh. S. Koshtoyants. Second impression

By Pavlov, I. P.

Moscow: Foreign Languages Publishing House, Undated; postwar. 662p., illustrated with frontis portrait of the gentleman and a couple diagrams, hardcover in 8x5 inch in khaki cloth boards titled in salmon pink and pale green. A completely sound copy with a few muddy smudges to covers, endsheets a little toned, text leaves unblemished, good to very good. We've combed the terminal footnotes section for Pavlov's off-the-cuff appraisal of rivals and contemporaries (as jotted down by his students); he is merely on simmer with Yerkes' work with apes, with John Locke's notion of inborn ideas, and even with Mary Becker-Eddie [sic]; when it comes to Henri Bergson, a mere "reactionary French philosopher-idealist. Gestalt psychology is a "reactionary trend." Spengler of course is a reactionary.

The Heckman Story

By Pelkey, Mildred (Heckman), compiler and editor

no city, NE: Self-published by the author, 1978. Paperback. Unpaginated, consisting in 214 charts reproduced four to a page recto and verso, plus several hand-drawn line maps, a dozen plates from period photography, a terminal index, and prefatory materials: perhaps eighty pages in all, softbound in a generic paper folder with printed titling. Contents are good with milld signs of handling and some foxing to text margins; cover is worn with handling, dust-soiled with small stains, and the overlapping edges bear numerous short closed tears. The quintessential "reading copy" Pelkey starts with nutshell background, what was going on: the Thirty Years War, crimes against agriculturists by state and church, a mass exodus from the Pfalz or "Palatinate of the Rhine

Russian in Song

By Lavaska, Anna, instructor in Russian language

Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1949. Paperback. 78p., musical notation and lyrics in Russian and English, texts appear to have been reproduced from typescript using both cyrillic and western machines. A softbound in 10.5x8.5 inch decorated wraps, somewhat edgeworn with turned corner-tips and a chip-flap to tail of spine. Mild general toning of paperstock, smudgy foxing to back cover, chip repaired expertly (it's still ugly), a good copy. Author remarks in her two-page preface that "Since Russian is a fairly new field in the English-speaking countries, I have come to rely upon the song as a teaching instrument.." Expect troikas and tractors, fairytales and warfare, many of these from children's repertoire.

[61 booklets, nearly complete set of the "Pamphlet library on the Soviet Union" produced for the Soviet pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair in New York]

Moscow: Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1939. Sixty-one different 4.25x5.5 inch booklets, avergage length 25-40 pages, almost all in very good condition. The boxed set sold at the World's Fair contained 58 titles, but some were apparently added in the next year or two, as a complete listing of titles from the April 1941 issue of "Soviet Russia Today" lists 63 in all (a photocopy of that list is included). The booklets missing from this set are "The Jewish Autonomous Region" and "The Soviet Press." Each is authored by an expert in the subject; for example, "The Soviet Screen" is by Eisenstein. Many outstanding examples of cover design; the "Magnitogorsk" is decorated in metallic ink and in blind, with red lettering. "The Moscow Subway" is classical 1930s motif. Two of the polar exploration texts have wraparound woodblock engravings. While most are in very good condition, several have a touch of rust to the staples; Moshkovsky's "Parachute-jumping and gliding" has rusted staples and soiled wraps, and "Soviet youth at work and play" has rubberstamps on the cover indicating it was received by the Labor Research Association in New York in 1940.
