Unread, Unmarked. Better than new since a heavy soft cover book such as this decidely needs protection from any handling. The photos appear mostly prev unpublished. Enhanced by the added colour (mostly shades of greys, browns and faded greens but done very authentically) . A gem for the collector. Weighs slightly over 1 kg - please expect extra overseas postge. You might like to add in another book to make the postage more viable / economic. Please enquire.

On 11 January 1879 the British Empire went to war with the independent kingdom of Zululand. The British anticipated a swift and decisive victory, placing great faith in modern firepower; no plans were made for suppressing the Zulu over a protracted period, or for providing defensive positions from which to occupy Zulu territory. However, the losses suffered at Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift quickly altered the British approach; throughout the rest of the war, the British fortified almost every position they occupied in Zululand, from permanent column depots to temporary halts. This title explores British defensive techniques employed during the war, and how these related to contemporary engineering theory. Among the sites covered are Eshowe Mission Station, forts Pearson and Tenedos, and Rorke's Drift.

Better than new, unmarked, unread. The book has been printed on paper, which has been stained to appear old.... the stains are identical on all pages. More of a travel book for Boer War enhusiasts than a biography. Many historic old photographs and some modern travelogue fotos in colour. Maps as eps, unlisted maps in text.

The only other markings are red ballpoint underlinings at Sir Garnet Wolseley of Boer War fame and at Rupert Brooke. Marbled eps and marbled edges both in magnificent condition. Gilt embellishments on spine. Truly of gift quality to any descendant whose ancestor is included. (Simply ask.) The biographies cover those notable British Leaders, Politicians, Explorers, Missionaries and Military men, who died after Queen Victoria and prior to 1922. As such it inclcudes those Britishers who were responsible leaders during most great events of the previous century including the Boer Wars and the Indian wars ( eg Lord Kitchener) , Edith Cavell etc, but especially yhose who died during W W I (a great number of recipients of the V C). A great reference source for any historian. Not suitable for overseas posatge.

The book has 4 creases down the spine but no signs of having been read. 16pp b&w photog plates, map of S A; other maps of the battles and photos in the text. Unfortunately no list. The virtue of this edition lies in the sources quoted. Heavy book so please expect some extra postage. The executions of Boer "War Criminals" makes one ashamed of a British heritage.

Details the fight between Cecil John Rhodes and Kekewich, which puts C J R in a very poor light. INCLUDED is a lengthy cutting from The Times Literary Supplement of Feb 25 1926, which sums up the sad situation. First Edition. Hard Cover Blue Cloth.
